Martin Luther King Day

Many of our teachers engaged students in learning about Martin Luther King this week. Some of our 4th graders shared their learning during lunch today.

If your child is interested in learning more about Dr. King, check out this great link:

4th Grade Spelling Bee

Recently, our 4th grade held a school-based spelling bee. Each classroom held their own bees and then the top students participated in our school bee in the cafeteria.

Congratulations to our winner, Collin Zito and to our alternate, Nathan Hood.

Collin will participate in the upcoming District Spelling Bee to be held on February 4th at Chariho Middle School.

New School Lunch Policy

Recently, the school committee adopted an updated School Lunch Policy. If a student owes more than $20, their lunch account can be closed until payment is received.

We will continue to send home notification regarding outstanding lunch balances. If you are experiencing some financial hardship, please call us for assistance. We can provide you with a free/reduced lunch application or set up a payment plan.

PTO Spaghetti Supper - January 22nd

We look forward to seeing students and their families at the PTO Spaghetti Supper next Friday evening.

Thank you to Jeannine Sawyer for chairing this event.

FLASH Class Instructors Needed

The dates have been set for Charlestown School’s FLASH program (Fun Learning After School Hours). Now all that’s needed are some local talented instructors. Instructors decide the age of the children they wish to instruct from kindergartners (age 5) to fourth graders (age 10), and receive $150 for the six-week session. All instructors/assistants who are 18 or older must have a background check to participate in the program. Middle school and high school students can teach classes as long as an adult is present in the room during each session.

Classes are held Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The 2016 FLASH dates are: March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 and April 5.

If you have time and talent to teach a class or know someone in the community who might be interested, please contact Beth Kocab at 524-9612<>.

Birthday Party Invitations

Teachers can not pass out birthday invitations in their classrooms unless all students are to be included. This helps to avoid tears at school. If you need addresses, we advise parents to consider participating in the PTO voluntary student directory.

Do you have any play people/animals?

Mrs. Lawing is looking for some gently used people and animal figures like these to use in her Spanish classes. Thank you for any possible donations.

Sharing food/candy at school

As a reminder, we do not allow students to share or distribute food or candy to peers at school. Please keep this in mind as we approach birthdays and holidays. If you would like to send in something to share with peers in your child's class, please consider items such as stickers and pencils. You could also consider sending in something for the entire class to use such as a book, fun class materials or game.
