A Message from EHS Multilingual Students
Mbote! Jambo! Habari! Xin chao! As-salamu alaykum! Namaste! Privet! Bonjour! ¡Hola! Ciao! Kon’nichiwa
Hello and happy Spirit Week! Did you know that there are at least 21 languages spoken by EHS students? Some students speak even more than 2 languages! The EHS community is blessed to have a student population that is growing in diversity.
Don’t let Covid bring you down because there are many amazing things to celebrate.
Maybe you are passing your math class. Maybe you got a new pet. It feels like spring outside. Some are spending more time with their families. The quarter is ending and we only have 3 quarters to go. What other things have you noticed that can be celebrated?
Have a great Spirit week!
From a group of EHS Multilingual Students

Term 2 Has Begun!
Congratulations to all students for completing Term 1 in during this exceptional COVID-19 year. Below are a few important reminders for the start of Term 2.
- Check your grades in PowerSchool! You will have a final grade in 0.5-credit, Term 1 courses. There is no formal, Term 1 grade report for 1.0-credit courses that continue to run through Term 2. Grades continue to average for 1.0-credit courses through the end of Term 2. 12th grade students, however, will have an official Term 1 grade archived for all of their courses.
- Reach out to helpdesk@ewsd.org if you need help logging in to PowerSchool or if you have other technology needs.
- Stay enrolled in all your Google Classrooms. Teachers will archive completed, Term 1 courses when they have completed grading for the course.
- A reminder that you are are expected to log in to all your Google Classrooms, complete your assigned work, and turn in the Google Form for attendance on remote learning days. Wednesdays continue to be synchronous classes. Reach out to your teachers if you need the Google meet or Zoom link for your Wednesday classes.

Red Cross Club Blood Drive
On Saturday, November 21, the Red Cross is hosting a blood drive at Essex Alliance Church from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The need for blood is constant and that has not changed during the pandemic. One donation can save up to 3 lives. Donating blood is a quick and easy way to give back and help the community. If you are 16, you are eligible to donate as long as you have a parent fill out the consent form! If you are interested in donating, click the link here to sign up!
If you have any questions please email Ella Hughes ehughes@vt.ewsd.org
Listening Sessions around Safety, Policing & Racial Justice
Essex has been engaging in a set of listening sessions around Safety, Policing and Racial Justice. To learn more about the listening sessions, click here. If you weren’t able to attend and still want to give input, please fill out this survey. The deadline for the survey is November 16th. Also, a task force is forming to create a plan of action for the Essex Police Department to address inequities. The task force will be informed by the voices of underrepresented residents. If you are a student interested in serving on the task force, please contact Jill Evans at jevans@essex.org.
NVU University Virtual Instant Decision Day for EHS
Looking for a quick college decision? Northern Vermont University will offer a Virtual Instant Decision Day for EHS students this coming Wednesday 11/18. Prior to the meeting students will need to complete the NVU Quick App. You will also need to connect with our EHS registrar Hollee Kennison (hkennison@ewsd.org) to ask her to send your EHS transcript to the Decision Day coordinator.
If you would like to claim one of the eight time slots for this opportunity please email Lcunninghamfirkey@ewsd.org to get on the list!

EHS Winter Warmth Fundraiser
Would you like to share a little warmth to families in need this winter season?
Essex High School is holding its annual gift card fundraiser to help support some of our families through the holidays and cold winter months ahead. We understand that these are trying times for everyone. This unexpected COVID-19 year has impacted so many families on many levels. If it is within your means, we hope you consider purchasing a gift card to donate to this fundraising effort.
Because this fundraiser is intended to support families through the holidays and long Vermont winter months, please consider donating a gift card from a store that offers a variety of goods - from clothing to food. Stores like Walmart and Target are preferred, but a card from any store is welcome and deeply appreciated.
To limit traffic inside of the building due to Covid-19, gift cards can be dropped off at the Essex High Security Office (located just inside the first door of the main entrance) or can be mailed to Essex High School Main Office ATTN: Arielle Boutwell, 2 Educational Drive, Essex Junction, Vermont 05452 from now until the end of the school day on December 18, 2020. Our EHS student assistance staff will then confidentially coordinate assistance to EHS students and families in need.
Giving can make this winter brighter and more hopeful for all. We had an outpouring of support last year and donations totaled over $3,000 and helped over 50 families over the course of the holidays and winter months. We know we can surpass last year’s collection with your help and know there are even more families who could use extra support this year. Let’s work together to share the warmth this winter season.
We thank you so very much for considering your extended EHS families throughout the next few weeks!

Speech and Debate Tournament Results
Speech and Debate Club had a great tournament on Saturday, Nov 7. Faith Awotho placed 2nd in Dramatic Interpretation and 1st in impromptu! First year competitors, Catherine Colley and Jesse Roberts, competed and helped to boost Essex in the total team score. Essex placed 2nd overall! Well done!
Toys for Kids of VT
A Toys for Kids of VT donation barrel is located in the main lobby by the main office door from now until Dec. 18. Toys for Kids of Vermont is a volunteer program sponsored by the Vermont Marine Corps League which collects new, unwrapped toys during the Christmas season and oversees their distribution to needy children in Vermont. All money collected stays in Vermont and is used to purchase age appropriate toys to supplement donations, and for older children. Over twenty thousand Vermont kids live below the poverty level and at Christmas time. The Toys for Kids program provides those kids with toys.
