News and Notes about #BeBCMS-SY 19- Issue 5
And......Heading into week Four
Elite work is happening in our classrooms and learning spaces. I have seen teachers use data to drive instruction. I have seen scholars who have never talked before in class, participate and take risks. I have seen scholars ask amazing questions to enhance their learning. WHY? Because they know WE care about them! That is when the magic happens!

What I'm Reading.... (The •5)
Focusing on John Hattie's work as we begin to pilot a class to watch effect size. In Visible Learning for Teachers: Maximizing Impact on Student Learning, Hattie links the biggest ever research project on teaching stratgies to practical classom implementation.
This is a great book to think through some of the stratgies you use in your own teaching. Ms. Gordon talked about on Twitter last night the immediate amount of feedback she is able to give on the new Google Classroom.
Teacher feedback is a .70 effect size! Think about these three things when giving scholars feedback to assess where they are in their learning:
1. Where am I going?
2. How am I going there?
3. Where to next?
Thinking through these three questions before you give feedback will make the feedback more consisten to your scholars.

Focus on......... Literacy (The •15)
Our #BeBCMS Moral Imperatives to an ELITE school are not changing. Do you remember them?
a. Come to School- BE AMAZING- Go Home! Repeat
b. Bell to Bell instruction
c. ALL instruction/teaching will be on grade level and standards based
d. Take a STAND for teaching and learning. Get up!
Focus On:
Literacy
We had great conversation and reflection during our first World Cafe. Out of those conversations, we agreed as a school Literacy at BCMS means:
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking
- Critical Thinking (Reasoning)
Learning with Liz: PopUP PL Monday:
We will look at the silo of skills of our Literacy work. In each team, we will determine what the top 5 skills are in each area for our scholars to be successful. Each grade level will then keep those skills at the forefront of our literacy focus. This is critical work in our schoolhouse as we work to build and sustain a culture of readers! We will begin our intentional teaching set at our first Innovation Center, Tuesday September 4th!
Here is our lesson design template: (make a copy first) Get a jump on your planning for next school year! Our instructional framework is not changing!
Re: Lesson designs: Are your Openings/Bellringers connecting to your Learning Targets? If not, how can you make that connection. Feedback on lesson designs coming this week!
Our Lesson Design rubric is here.
