Beware the pitch to the common man--A FACE IN THE CROWD (1957)
Wednesday, October 12 @ 6:30 pm
Sage 1210
A wealthy and well connected politician runs for president and turns to a popular entertainer to capture the vote of the common man. But what happens when the entertainer turns out to be a corrupt “demagogue in denim” whose cynical manipulation of his audience and lust for power are exposed?
Such is the tension at the heart of the 1957 film, A Face in the Crowd, the second of four films featured in the History/Political Science “Presidential and Electoral Politics” film sub-series.
Directed by Elia Kazan and starring Andy Griffith and Patricia Neal, A Face in the Crowd, is a remarkable film which foretold the dangers posed by pseudo-populism in a world where commerce, celebrity, mass media and politics commingle.
Screened in conjunction with “U.S. History since 1877” and introduced by Professor Stephen Kercher.
All members of the campus community (staff, students and faculty alike) are invited to attend.
