Our First Week Together

What a wonderful start of the week! I have popped into all of our classrooms and though we have had some technical glitches, we have been thrilled to spend time with our kids! A HUGE welcome back to our returning families and a BIG WELCOME to our new families. There is no greater place to be than FVES!

This newsletter is designed to inform and give you the latest information. Please know that we continue to work together to gather information that is pertinent to the week. As things slow down (if they do), we will go to a bi-monthly newsletter.

Chromebook and Hotspot Distribution

You will receive information from WCPSS on technology pick-up sites and procedures. Please wait to go collect your device until you have received an email from WCPSS stating that your student's device is ready to be picked up. (Please note that our school is not one of the pickup sites.) Apex High School appears to be the closest distribution site to our school at this time. The distribution date for the devices began this week, however, I have not heard of anyone being notified for pick up at FVES. You will also be provided with information to support your use of the devices, and how to access additional help if needed. Please know that we understand you are doing your best while you wait for technology.

Rocket Reunion Material Pick Up

We have a lot of materials that we will be sending home with students in order to support their learning for the 2020-2021 school year. This materials include supplemental aids such as whiteboards and math manipulatives that will help students in understanding and practicing the content being taught, but these supplies also include materials such as books, art supplies, and workbooks that your student will need to have in order to accessing the material that teachers are presenting.

We will have a pick up event for these supplies on Monday, August 24th from 9-11 or Tuesday, August 25th from 3-5 PM. We ask that EVERY family come by school during one of the designated pick up events to collect the materials for your student. Please see the pick up times above.

Check out the picture below for a map of where to go when you arrive on campus for materials pick up. We will have a sweet treat for all of our ROCKETS!

If you have any questions about this process, please reach out to abyars@wcpss.net .

Online Teaching and Learning

Online Learning and Teaching is going to be different this year than it was in Spring 2020. We will be providing instruction for new information and standards. This year, students will be engaged in a full day of learning. However, their day will be a combination of online and offline learning and practice and will look much like a regular school day. WCPSS has identified standards that were not taught during the Spring and has built the time and resources needed for us to teach the standards into the school year. Attendance will be taken and assignments will be graded. Please review the WCPSS Guidelines for Roles and Expectations for Students and Families in the Blended and Online Learning Environment.

Please initially help your child with logging in, and understanding the mute and video buttons. He or she may initially need your support with the Google Classroom, but the teacher will be working hard to help them learn to navigate it, as well. Here is a video that may provide additional support for you: How to Navigate the WCPSS Virtual Platforms and the link to WCPSS tech guide for families can be found here.

As we partner together to ensure the best learning experience for all students, we know there will be challenges to Blended and Online learning. We have tried to provide breaks within the day to allow for a mix of online instruction in the morning, followed by offline and/or independent practice in the afternoon. Teachers will work closely with families to provide support and understanding as we navigate the year. Please give your child and family time to adjust to this new process, and know we will make adjustments and build in appropriate supports if needed. Communication with your child’s teacher is key!

Kindergarten Parents and New WCPSS Students

Remember, if you have not done so please send your immunization records and NC Health Assessment forms to the school by September 15, 2020. North Carolina law G.S. 130-A-155(a) requires proof of immunizations for all students, whether they are enrolled in virtual learning or in-person. Please email completed immunization records and health assessments to Lisa McNeill at mmcneill2@wcpss.net or fax to 919-670-4210.

Childcare During Remote Learning

Families looking for a program to supervise their children during remote learning can view available options at www.wakeed.org/fast. Organizations across Wake County have worked together to provide locations convenient to most families that provide affordable supervision during the day. Financial assistance is offered by individual providers.

Updates to Food and Lunch Distribution

Plans for curbside service at strategic locations are being determined along with designated service times for food distribution for students engaged in remote learning and the VA. Please know, however, that after August 31, 2020, based on current federal regulations, the following items would apply to meals:

  • Students eligible for free and reduced-price meals will receive free meals. Remember that you have to apply each year for free or reduced-price meals. You can find the online application and more information here: https://www.wcpss.net/meals.

  • Students not eligible for free and reduced-price meals will have to pay.

  • Under current regulations, a student ID number will be required for meals as proof of enrollment and the adult must prove they are the parent/guardian if the student is not present.
