GROWTH MINDSET - YOUR BRAIN IS LIKE A MUSCLE

Don't be surprised if your child comes home today telling you that our brains are like muscles. Our PAWS & Pride message explained that our brain grows connections when we are learning something new or if we are facing challenges. When students are practicing new skills, the brain is rewiring itself and making these connections. So just like muscles, we need to exercise our brains to help them grow.

Research in neuroscience has shown that the brain is far more malleable than we ever knew. When children (or adults) are learning something or struggling with a difficult math problem, neural networks grow new connections, strengthen existing ones, and build insulation that speeds transmission of impulses. We can increase this neural growth by trying new things, using good strategies to work through difficult tasks, and asking questions.

Below you will find an interesting graphic with more information about the science behind the brain. I've also included a link to short video read aloud of the book Your Fantastic Elastic Brain. Another option for a family evening? Play a game together so that everyone can exercise their brains.
