Stepping In to 6th Grade
Oct 5th - Oct 9th
Important Dates
ELA
Students finished the book Towers Falling this week. We did some modified construction of towers and students saw what was necessary to construct something so remarkable. Ask your student to share a summary about the book! Next Week, we are looking forward to working with students on leveling up on making inferences, making predictions, and citing textual evidence. They will be working in small groups, reading independently, and working hard to raise their original pretest scores. We will also be celebrating Homecoming in the classroom with a few football and homecoming assignments prior to our next read aloud, Unstoppable by Tim Green.

Math
Essential Learning Outcomes for Unit 2:
ELO 3: Students will be able to compare two quantities using ratios.
The students will begin the week with ratios and ratio language. They will learn how to represent ratios with diagrams, recipes, color mixtures and how to draw double number line diagrams.
Reminder: if they are not completing practice problems in class, this becomes homework.

Science
This week we are continuing our Engineering Design unit! Students will utilize all the skills they have learned so far to build, test, and redesign a boat!
6-8.ETS1.A.1: Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
6-8.ETS1.B.1: Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem
6-8.ETS1.B.3: Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
6-8.ETS1.B.2: Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several designing solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.
