Math: Statistic and Probability

Unit 5 tests went home last week. We began our final math module last Friday.

Statistics and Probability

In this module, students move from simply representing data into analysis of data.

Students begin to think and reason statistically, first by recognizing a statistical question as one that can be answered by collecting data.

Students learn that the data collected to answer a statistical question has a distribution that is often summarized in terms of center, variability, and shape.

Throughout the module, students see and represent data distributions using dot plots and histograms.

They study quantitative ways to summarize numerical data sets in relation to their context and to the shape of the distribution.

As the module ends, students synthesize what they have learned as they connect the graphical, verbal, and numerical summaries to each other within situational contexts.

Authors' Reception

Students select one piece of writing from the year and revise it to their liking. Then, they create artwork to accompany it. Some students will recite famous poems.

Please mark your calendar for Thursday, May 21. We will present our Authors' Reception at 1:00 in the auditorium.

Social Studies

Chapter 6 tests went home last week.

Students begin Chapter 7 titled, "Changes for the Jewish People."

Objective: Analyze the religious, economic, and social structures of the ancient Hebrews.

Class Novel

We continue listening to and discussing the book, I am David. It is a 1963 novel by Anne Holm. It tells the story of a young boy who, with the help of a prison guard, escapes from a concentration camp in an unnamed Eastern European country (according to geographical clues, probably Bulgaria) and journeys to Denmark. Along the way he meets many people who teach him about life outside the camp.

Book Trailer Project

Students continue working on their book trailers. See an example below.

Check out the link on Edmodo for dozens of student examples of book trailers.
