Challenger Middle School Mission

To provide an exemplary education that develops critical thinking and problem solving skills which inspire our students to challenge their minds and charge their spirits.

Principal's Corner

Hello Charger Families!

We are rapidly approaching the end of Quarter 3 and Spring Break is near! There are only two and a half weeks left in the quarter. With that said, we need to make sure all students finish strong. One way we can do that is by making attendance a priority. Please make sure your child is here each and every day so that they get the most instruction and have a chance to complete all assignments. Students should be diligently checking FOCUS for grades and keeping up to date with all assignments. Parents, please support this endeavor by checking FOCUS with your students. Challenger would like to see as many students as possible attend the Quarter 3 celebration!

Aside from academics, our final sports of the year - golf and tennis - will be starting towards the end of the month. Both family Math Night and our next dance are also coming up, and we can't wait to see all of our student's smiling faces at these events.

We are so very proud of the students at Challenger Middle and their academic growth. If you see that your student is underperforming please feel free to call the school to schedule an appointment with his/her teachers. Student success - emotionally, physically, and academically - are our first priority.

Respectfully,

Stacia Winfree

Principal – Challenger Middle

Our 6th-grade ELA teachers did a mini room/hallway transformation with a Toys R Us theme this past month! They were teaching Central Idea, using an article that focused on the downfall of the Toys R Us empire.

Our 6th-grade students spent two weeks diving deep into central idea with engaging lessons, fun games, and remembering to never grow up!

Blackout & Spiral Poetry

In Ms. Aulet's 8th grade Language Arts class, students got creative with blackout and spiral poetry creations! To make blackout poetry, students get a random page from a book and they have to black out the page, apart from a few words to create a poem. Spiral poetry is pretty much described by its name, students make a poem in a spiral shape. We loved getting to see the amazing poetry that students created!

Spelling Bee 🐝

We had another successful school spelling bee this year! Our spelling bee had 42 participants and went through a total of 31 rounds! Congratulations to everyone who participated and a special congratulations to our top three winners!

1st place - Austin Stout (6th grade)

2nd place - Dominic Lopez (6th grade)

3rd place - Elijah Janssen (8th grade)

Austin Stout and Dominic Lopez will go on to represent Challenger at the District Spelling Bee held Thursday, March 9th @ Three Oaks Middle!!! We are so proud of all of our participants!

NJHS Volunteer Work

A few weeks ago, NJHS took a trip to the Second Act thrift store, which raises money for domestic abuse shelters. Students were earning volunteer hours and helping organize and distribute donations.

Challenger Ambassadors

On Friday, February 17th our Challenger Ambassadors & Jazz Band visited Skyline Elementary to talk about everything middle school! Whether or not they are becoming a Charger, our Ambassadors shared what all incoming middle school students need to know! Plus our Jazz Band had an amazing performance.

SWFL Fair

Each year the Southwest Florida & Lee County Fair offers a space to display livestock, agriculture, crafts, and the like in a safe, family-oriented environment. Challenger participates by setting up a booth that is themed differently each year. Our theme this year was "Barn in the USA" and some of our classes decorated little furry friends based on different states. The fair runs from February 23rd - March 5th, make sure you stop by and check out our booth!

Jazz Band MPA Results

Please help us in congratulating the students of this year’s Charger Jazz Band. They were the only middle school in Lee County to earn a Superior (Grade equivalent to an A) rating at the Florida Band Masters Association District 18 Music Performance Assessment this weekend. Furthermore, they were the only middle school Jazz Band in our district since the 2019-2020 school year to earn a Superior at Jazz Band MPA (MPA is like our band FSA).

Please congratulate our Jazz Band students and Mr. Devitt for this amazing accomplishment!

Class Pet of the Month

Shell-B the Tortoise!

Shell-B is a 7-year-old Russian Tortoise that resides in Mr. Herrera's classroom (Mr. Herrera Senior). His diet consists of only lettuce. According to Mr. Herrera, Shell-B has absolutely no personality, and that's what makes him so funny. He is an expert excavator and loves to dig tunnels all around his tank. His enclosure consists of a lake and a cave so he can either relax or explore.

March Bus Driver of the Month!

Our March bus driver of the month is Lourdes Padrom from 1943! We're thankful for her always being on time, both morning and afternoon! She is a great example of the Challenger spirit.

New Teacher Shout Out, Ms. Flecha!

Ms. Flecha is brand new at Challenger Middle School, and brand new to teaching! This is her first year as a teacher, she's been with us and teaching for only two months! For fun, Ms. Flecha likes walking and spending time with family and friends. When asked what her favorite part of teaching is, she told us she loves when she can see that a student has learned something and she loves the way they make her laugh. We are so lucky to have Ms. Flecha at Challenger!

7th-Grade Chick-Fil-A Spirit Night

At the end of January, Challenger hosted a spirit night at Chick-Fil-A to raise money for our 7th graders! The spirit night was a HUGE success, and we wanted to thank everyone that came out to support us!!! We'll see you at the next one! 😊
