UPE News Update
May 24, 2018
Have a great Summer!
We are so very grateful for our amazing PTO!
You are the best!
Update on Music at UPE:
As your children progress through the Manitou Springs School Middle and High School, we are proud to announce that they will still have Mr. Weimer as their teacher. Starting next year, Mr. Weimer will be serving as the Band and Music Director in all 6 - 12 grades. While a loss for UPE, it’s a win for the larger Mustang Team.
Taylor Weimer has made a multi-generation impact on our whole community. He showed us all what is possible in Elementary School Music and is an inspiration to us all. His professionalism and commitment to your children has been unmatched. His generosity to our school is ongoing - he has offered to help transition our new Strings/Band/Vocal Music Director and has been integral in the development of our new, long-term music strategic plan at Ute Pass Elementary School. Taylor, you are amazing!
We are pleased to announce that we are expanding our Music offerings next year. Staring in 3rd grade, we will be offering Strings Classes and our music instruction will move to full time with additional music classes across the grades. In the next few years, we will be expanding band to other grades and bringing strings instructions to the lower grades.
To accomplish all this, we are very pleased to announce that Mr. Ian Ferguson is our new Strings/Band/Vocal Music Director for Ute Pass Elementary School. Mr. Ferguson served as the Program Director for the Colorado Springs Conservatory for the past six years. He also serves as an adjunct Professor of Alexander Technique at the University of Denver Lamont School of Music. Other experience includes serving as Music Director/Pianist/Conductor at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. He has extensive experience working with children, has experience with both instrumental and vocal music, and brings a passion for engaging all children with music. During his sample lesson with our first graders, our children were immediately drawn to him and made beautiful, complex music within minutes of his arrival. His references from previous employment were simply outstanding.
Here’s a wonderful article about our new teacher from the Colorado Springs Business Journal:

Ute Pass Elementary
Students entering 2nd-6th grade
July 30-August 2 AND
8:30 – 11:30 AM
This opportunity is for any student striving to improve educational and personal goals as well as prepare for the start of the school year with fun engaging activities.
- Jump Back in Time to study historical people and places through reading, writing, and math.
- Fun filled team building with hands on exploration
Instead of the traditional two-week program in June—just after school is out and with months yet to go before it starts again--we’ll offer students a fun, but rigorous two-week re-connection with their peers, school and literacy/math skills just before school starts again. Jump start also serves as an enrichment program and present a great leadership opportunity for all students looking to help lead our school and its students into a new year!
