Weekly Update

Good Evening Edison Families,

I hope you are having a nice weekend and getting ready for the week!

It looks like winter finally arrived last week with lots of snow! With colder temperatures coming this week, please make sure your child has a coat, hat, gloves, boots, etc. Students do go outside for recess to get some fresh air, so make sure they are prepared!

If you did not get a robocall for the snow day notification, that means we do not have an updated phone number in our Mistar program. Please make sure to update your contact information so we can call you and you receive important district messages! (see below)

Enjoy the rest of your evening and have a great week,

Bennett Tyler

Student Drop Off

Just a reminder, you can use the drop off line to drop off your student. The student should exit the car from the passenger side and the adult should stay in the car. There is no parking in the drop off line.

Another option is to park in a marked parking space. Then, you can walk your child to the door.

Please DO NOT drive through the parking lot and cut back into the drop off line. It slows down the line causes a jam by the front door.

Thank you for your help and for making sure our students arrive safely!

Wayne Westland Mobile App

  • There's an app for that! Wayne-Westland Community Schools has a new mobile app that enables subscribers to quickly access information from our district website. You can view lunch menus, access parent and student connect, save events to your phone from our school calendars and much more. There are also quick links to our district Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube channels.

  • The app is available in the App Store for Apple devices and the Google Play Store for Android devices. You can also scan the QR codes below.

Extra Slice of Pizza on Thursdays and Buying Milk

You can now add money to your child's account for an extra slice of pizza or snack from the snack cart. PaySchools is the website used by the Nutrition Department: https://payschoolscentral.com/

Pizza day is every Thursday at Edison! Students receive a slice of Dominos Pizza at lunch, but they are able to purchase a 2nd slice. You can send in $2.00 cash with your child on Thursday (by 9:30am when the pizza order is placed). The money will be collected and sent to the kitchen. The money MUST be turned in so we have an accurate lunch count. Parents could also send in $10.00 and that would cover an extra slice for 5 weeks because the money will be added to the student's account.

If a student brings a lunch from home and they would like milk, it costs $0.50. Although we provide a free breakfast and lunch to all students, the state does not reimburse schools for milk only.

Please Keep Your Child Home for 24 hours if they are sent home sick from school!

If your child is sick (fever, throwing up, diarrhea, etc) please keep them home until they are fever free and have no symptoms for at least 24 hours. For example, if your child throws up at school on Monday, they should not return on Tuesday. Please monitor them on Tuesday and make sure they are symptom free for 24 hours before returning (Wednesday at the earliest). Thank you for keeping everyone healthy!

Contact Information

Please make sure your contact information is up to date! With colder weather, there may be school closings, bus delays or cancellations, etc. Robocalls and communication is sent to the phone number/email we have in our system. If you need to update your contact information, please do that ASAP! We need to be able to reach someone for closings and for an emergency, sickness at school, etc. Thank you!

Emergency Connectivity Fund (ECF) Ipads

Loan Agreements have been sent home! Once the form is completed and returned, your child will receive their Ipad. If you have not returned the form, try to send it in this week. We will be doing some challenges to encourage students to use it over Winter Break!

Original message below:

You may have heard that the Wayne-Westland Community School District was awarded a grant from the Emergency Connectivity Fund (ECF) which provides an iPad with 1 year of cellular data to all of our K-4 students. These devices can be used to support learning not just at home and at school, but will have data access anywhere within the Verizon coverage area.

We are thrilled to announce that they have arrived!

The iPads come in a protective case with an attached keyboard, and of course a charging cable and charging adapter are also included.

We will soon be sending out a Loan Agreement form. Please review and reply to the form. It has options to agree to the terms and conditions so we can send an iPad home with your student (s), or select the opt-out option if you aren’t prepared to accept the responsibility of the device outside of the school building. Please note that opting-out does not preclude your child (ren) from participating in iPad activities in school.

Last week, Edison 4th-5th Graders attended a virtual assembly with a presenter from OK 2 SAY. The assembly focused on internet and social media safety. It was also a reminder to students that they need to report anything that threatens their safety or the safety of others to a trusted adult immediately.

Parents/Students can report concerns via text to 652729, by phone (855-565-2729), or by email (ok2say@mi.gov).

At Edison, we care about your child and we want them to have the most valuable educational experience possible. Your child's attendance directly affects their performance in the classroom.

Regular attendance is expected, unless your child is sick or there is a family emergency. If your child is absent, please call the attendance line to report the absence. 734-419-2606

Per our district attendance policy, attendance letters will be mailed at 5, 10, and 15 absences (excused or unexcused). If attendance does not improve, we will schedule a meeting to discuss how to best support regular attendance at school. Our goal is support parents to prevent a truancy referral to the county.

You can check your child's attendance in the Parent Portal (link at the bottom of this update). Please contact the office if there is anything we can do to help get your child to school on time every day!

Social Media Concerns

Students SHOULD immediately notify a school staff member or a trusted adult if they become aware of any potential threat posted to social media or anywhere else. Students can also use the confidential Ok2Say tip line by;

  • Calling 8-555-OK2SAY (855-565-2729)

  • Texting 652729 (OK2SAY)

  • Emailing OK2SAY@mi.gov.

Covid Protocols

As a public school, we are still required to report positive Covid tests to the Wayne County Health Department. If you or your child test positive for Covid, please contact the office. We will discuss symptoms and provide a return to school date. Currently, students must stay home 5 days from the onset of symptoms.

Late Student Arrival and Early Dismissals

Please make every effort to get your student to school on time! Students should arrive between 9:00-9:10am. Once staff leave the curb, you will need to sign in your child in the office. Bring your phone to scan the QR code to sign in and make a lunch choice. If you don't have a phone, a laptop is available.

Students should remain in school for the entire day, unless there is an emergency situation. It is very difficult to check students out early as we start our dismissal procedures around 3:45pm. If your child needs to leave early or if you need to change how they are going to be dismissed, please notify the office by 3:30pm.

Student Check out

Please bring your ID with you to the office when checking out your child. Just a reminder, only adults listed as emergency contacts will be allowed to check out a student.
