By Ellis Bartolomeo

Statistics of Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia affects 1-2% of adolescent and young adult women.

Approximately 80% of bulimia patients are female.

Symptoms of Bulimia Nervosa

Physical: Swelling of the check or jaw area

Emotional: Creation of lifestyle schedules to make time for binge eating sessions

Social: Self-esteem related to body image

Behavioral: Frequent consuming of very large amounts of food followed by behaviors to prevent weight gain, such as intentional vomiting

Frequent trips to the restroom after meals, signs/smells of vomiting, and wrappers or packages of laxatives or diuretics

Even Elton John suffered from Bulimia

The legendary singer, songwriter, and pianist Elton John had the eating disorder bulimia for 16 years. In 1990, he sought treatment for it. He said he was in denial, and he thought he could fix it on his own. His personal battles with bulimia- and his openness about it- have provided more public inspiration and awareness on eating disorders and how they can affect men.
