South Grove Intermediate School
News and Notes for February
Principal's Post
Dear Parents,
It is hard to believe we are already through January. It may be cold outside, but the South Grove students are warm inside because they are busy! Students continue to practice math facts, sight words, reading fluency and comprehension, problem solving, and writing in order to be prepared for ISTEP testing. ISTEP tests begin February 27. Students will be doing one test per day for that week. Please make sure they get good sleep and come to school with a great attitude! Remind them to do their very best!

Spelling Bee
Hello, South Grove! We were so excited for the spelling bee this year. Every single classroom had to have two representatives for the contest. Every classroom had to do a classroom spelling bee to get their top 2 spellers. Each class had two students would represent the classrooms and if one of them wasn’t here there would be a backup person that was in 3rd. Through countless rounds of stiff competition, there were two people left in the final round. They went through approximately 4 more rounds with these two fierce spellers and Zoe Carr from Mrs. Mann’s class in 5th grade spelled the word pertinacity to win the South Grove spelling bee.
Second place was awarded to Ava Lantzer, 6th grade from Mr.Sutton’s class. In 3rd was Anna Blackburn, 5th grade from Ms. Wilson's room. The champion, Zoe Carr, is representing our school at Franklin Township Middle School West. If by some chance Zoe can not compete, Ava will go instead. The next round of the spelling bee takes place on February 21st at 5:30 p.m. Good luck Zoe!

Science Fair
This year’s South Grove 6th grade Lead Science Fair is shaping up to be one of the best we've seen. Students get to use science boards to show the project question, hypothesis, and results. They also have all their materials on the board to show what they were making it with. Many students include pictures of them conducting the experiment and what it turned to look like. Good luck 6th grade! I'm looking forward to seeing your science boards line the hallway and finding out who wins this year's fair!

Currently, there are three South Grove educators with projects in need of funding. Music Notes from Mrs. Alkire
Fifth-grade students will be learning to play the recorder this semester in music class. Learning a musical instrument helps students understand musical concepts such as beat, rhythm, and melody and also helps develop coordination and motor skills.
Your child can purchase a new recorder for $2.00. Cash or checks (made payable to South Grove Intermediate) will be accepted. I also have used (clean and sterilized) recorders that students may borrow free of charge for music class.
Let me know if you have any questions. (aalkire@bgcs.k12.in.us)
WISH-TV I Love To Read Challenge
For January and February, students keep track of their independent reading minutes. Students who participate will receive a certificate of achievement and those who read a total of at least 2500 minutes will receive a special Outstanding Reader sticker. Those that reach the challenge minutes goal will also qualify to win a prize and help their classroom with the chance to win a prize. The winning students and classrooms will be invited to the Children's Museum for a special ceremony in April.

This is Kelsey! She's a budding chef who dreams of baking in Paris, and I believe that someday she will do just that! She won a recipe contest here at SG and got to help a chef prepare her "Nutmegalicious Apple Delight" for the whole school today. Thank you, Kelsey! Thank you, #chartwellscatering! #sgisbg
