SUNSET TIMES
October Edition
WELCOME BACK!
Principal's Corner with Mrs. Montecucco
We have completed our first month of school. A huge thank you to our families for a successful start and your grace as we navigate these uncertain times with COVID. Our goal is to provide a positive and safe learning environment for our students. One that celebrates our differences, captures our strengths and individualizes the needs of each child.
This is my 27th year in education and I consider myself so fortunate to be serving at Sunset. From the staff that give your children a fresh start everyday to our Airway Heights Police Department that checks in on us, to the Baptist Church that helps with needed supplies. Such a supportive and close knit community. Thank you for entrusting us with your child(ren). On behalf of myself and Mrs. Larsen (below on right), our assistant principal, here's to a successful school year!
Cheney School District Safety Update
With the reopening of our campuses for in-person learning, we are diligent in following health and safety measures. Please ensure your child has a mask every day, as they will be expected to wear them indoors at all times except when eating. When students are eating, they will be at least 6 feet apart.
When your child is sick, they must stay home and parents/guardians should contact the school health team for additional guidance. In addition, if your child is a close contact to someone who has tested positive or is testing because they are symptomatic, please keep your child home and contact the school health team. It is very important your contact information is up-to-date, as well, so our health team can reach you immediately if your child becomes sick during the school day.
A big part of ensuring our schools are safe is keeping possible or probable cases out of school until students are not symptomatic and/or they have a negative test result (or a quarantine/isolation period has ended).
Finally, thank you for returning the Student Photograph consent form. At this time if we have not received your form to opt it will be assumed that your child can be photographed for any school related purpose.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP - A Note from your Librarian
Your child’s safety is a primary concern for all of us. We share your hope that children learn and grow in a safe and secure learning environment. Every year throughout Cheney School District, students from kindergarten to fifth grade are taught the district’s Digital Citizenship or Internet Safety curriculum.
During the next several weeks, your child’s Librarian, Mrs. J, will be starting a series of short lessons centering on aspects of Internet Safety. These lessons will include password privacy, maintaining safety online, and using the internet appropriately.
If you wish to see the Internet Safety information, we encourage you to log onto www.NetSmartz.org.
