News From The Nest
February, 2015 Edition
Principal’s Message
It is hard to believe that the second marking period is over and we are half way through the school year! Snow…no snow, the weather has certainly been unpredictable. Six two hour delays…can you believe it! And worse yet, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and forecasts six more weeks of winter. Can you believe he bit the mayor! Anyway, please be aware that the second marking period ended on January 23, 2015 and that second quarter report cards will be distributed on February 5, 2015. The elementary report cards are designed to report the achievement of students whose instructional program is based on the Maryland State College and Career Readiness Standards (Common Core). If you have any questions or concerns regarding the second marking period report card, please contact your student’s teacher to set up a conference.
During the second full week of March, the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) will begin on Monday, March 2, 2015 with March 24, 2015 being the final day of assessments. PARCC will be administered to all third, fourth, and fifth grade students in Maryland Public Schools. PARCC is a series of Mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy assessments that measure whether students are on track in their learning and for success after high school and will work as a tool for enhancing teaching and learning. For more information on PARCC, please visit the following parent link: http://www.parcconline.org/for-parents. Here are several ways parents/guardians can help their children to do their best:
Write the assessment dates and times on your calendar. Avoid scheduling appointments or trips.
Review math facts daily.
Encourage your child to read. Reading daily and checking basic comprehension is the best way to prepare your child for doing well on tests.
Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep.
Provide a nutritious breakfast each morning.
Don’t be too anxious. Say, “This test is important. I know you will try hard and do your best.” Your confidence is contagious!
We are thankful for the opportunity to work with your children each day and we are committed, along with you, to help your child achieve learning success. Every student’s goal is to put forth their best effort. Perseverance is the key! We wish our students much success as they do their best and we appreciate your home support.
The PARCC testing schedule is as follows (Units are Testing Sessions):

Joppa View ES National Elementary Honor Society
Under the supervision of Dianne Libercci, Michelle Chrisakis, Beth Anne McNulty and Stephanie Wienhold, The National Elementary Honor Society from Joppa View Elementary teamed up with the National Honor Society from Perry Hall High School to create over 200 individual craft bags for the Casey Cares Foundation. Casey Cares will deliver the craft bags to critically ill children in surrounding hospitals. In addition to these craft bags, students decorated bags, made crafts and assembled candy bags for the Moveable Feast. The Moveable Feast is an organization that delivers hot meals to members of the community.
