Fire Alarm Upgrade- Have you seen the great big sign on our school property? We are having upgrades to our fire alarm system, thanks to state funding.

Gold Daisy School Contest- Vote Daily Now until March 20th
We're thrilled to host our first ever Gold Daisy School contest! An opportunity for all of us to show the love to our favorite school!
Over these next few weeks, we invite you to nominate your favorite school to win some amazing prizes from our sponsors!
The school with the most votes will receive:
- A $500 cash prize to the PTA courtesy of The Dan Hozhabri Group
- Free Chick-fil-a Breakfast for all faculty and staff courtesy of Chick-fil-a of North Frederick
- Free Open Jump Pass for every student courtesy of Pump It Up of Frederick
The contest is open to ELEMENTARY schools (students in K through grade 5) based in the Macaroni Kid Frederick territory. Nominations will begin on February 15, 2018 at 11AM and end on March 20, 2018 at 8PM. Once the nominating period closes, the winning school will be contacted and awarded the prize package the last week in March.

March 12th PTA Meeting
Thank you to everyone who came out to our PTA meeting this past Monday! Marlon Moran, LYNX Advocate at Frederick High was our guest speaker. What an amazing presentation! How fortunate for our future cadets to have this opportunity!

Our next PTA event is Movie Night- This Friday March 9th We are going to be watching CoCo. Feel free to bring a sleeping bag, pillow or lawn chair. Popcorn and water will be given away. Candy will be available for $1.00 Friday during the day will be a Music Spirit Day. Can't wait to see how we rock out this day!
Our next PTA meeting is April 23rd @ 6:30. Please plan to be there!
CAREER DAY
We are quickly approaching our yearly Career Day and are looking for volunteer speakers! For the past few years, Whittier has hosted 10-15 speakers to share their careers with our fifth grade students. Each speaker shares for a 20 minute block in each of our five fifth grade classrooms. During these blocks, students have the opportunity to explore new careers and ask questions. Career Day is scheduled for May 16th from 1:15-3:15. Please contact our Guidance Counselors - Carleigh Rich at 240-236-3135 or Lisa Reese at 240-236-3170 - if you are interested in participating this year. Thank you!
Science Fair Information
2018 Science Fair Project Registration is HERE!
Hello Families!
Whittier’s Science Fair & STEM Night is on Thursday, March 22nd!
Our Science Fair is from 6:00-6:30pm in the gym and STEM Night is from 6:30-8:00pm in the cafeteria and other locations with hands-on STEM activity stations that include science, technology, engineering and math.
*Students in grades PreK-2nd have the option to submit a student science fair project (individual or group.)
*Students in grades 3-5 are required to submit a student science fair project (individual or group.)
Science Fair projects must be brought into school the morning of Wednesday, March 21st from 8:30-11:30.
Please register your child’s science fair project by visiting the links below or visiting our school’s website (http://education.fcps.org/whes/) and clicking on “Science Fair Sign Up and Info.”
Science Fair project boards will be on sale at the school store for $4 each.
Science Fair projects must be brought home during STEM Night on Thursday, March 22nd or picked up/brought home on Friday, March 23rd. Any projects left after 4pm on Friday, March 23rd will be thrown away.
A few reminders about projects:
Science Fair projects are not judged. Our goal is focused more on student knowledge and experience when creating their individual and/or class project.
Live animals are not allowed. Feel free to add photos instead.
Open containers are not allowed. All containers must have a lid and must be attached at all times.
Please do not include anything of value in your project. You can take photos for your display and have your child bring the valuable item home after their class presentation.

STEM DONATIONS NEEDED
The STEM club is planning our Whittier STEM Night for March 22 from 6:30-8pm. Students will participate in various hands-on activity stations that are related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We are in need of the following materials listed below for these activities. Please note your items will not be returned to you.
If you can donate any of the items below, please write STEM Night on the items you turn in to ensure we get them to the library. If you cannot donate items but still would like to help, we are accepting money and/or gift cards to local stores (Weis, Walmart, and Food Lion) to put towards items for our STEM activities such as eggs for the popular Egg Drop. Please send in your items or money/gift cards by March 15th to ensure we have them in time to begin prepping for STEM Night.
We greatly appreciate anything you can do to help make our STEM Night a success!

YEARBOOK ORDERS DUE THIS WEEK
ALL PAPER ORDERS ARE DUE NO LATER THAN 4:00 pm on FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 2018. No paper order forms will be accepted after this date.
You may order online at YBPAY.LIFETOUCH.COM using the WHES ID code written at the bottom of the paper order form. Ordering online is a safe and easy way to order the yearbook package that is right for your family. ONLINE ORDERS WILL BE ACCEPTED VIA YBPAY UNTIL MARCH 31st.
Basic, softcover book are $20.00 and many upgrades and extras are available to add at an additional charge. Check out the amazing packages available on the order form, or pick and choose your own upgrades to add to your book.
Please note:
- Only Fall portraits will be used in the yearbook even if you purchase Spring portraits of your child.
- If you ordered your child's Fall portraits (school pictures) online at the beginning of the year, you had the option to purchase a yearbook at that time. If you think you may have ordered one in the Fall, please double check your credit card records so that you do not accidentally order two yearbooks or miss the opportunity to purchase one. The WHES Yearbook editor does not have the ability to check this information for you.
