Principal's Message...

Spring is coming... or so I'm told at least. It may not feel like it yet, but it has to come eventually, right?! Spring is a busy time at Sunnyside Elementary, and we will have several things going on over the next few months:

Field Trips: March through May are definitely our "busy" months when it comes to field trips. In the coming months, we have several trips planned for kindergarten and first grade. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for information from your child's teacher as we move through the spring!

Spring Concerts: Our spring concerts will take place from April 17 - 20. Each day, a different group of classes performs at 1:00 pm. Our schedule for concerts is as follows:

  • Monday, April 17 -- First Grade: Bollmann, Harteneck, Friedrich

  • Tuesday, April 18 -- First Grade: Pearson, Larsen, Swanson, Plein

  • Wednesday, April 19 -- Kindergarten: Richardson, McDonnell, Prigge, Johnson

  • Thursday, April 20 -- Kindergarten: Kelly, Dressen, Plonsky, Marklevits

Scholastic Book Fair: Our spring Book Fair will also take place April 17 - 20 to coincide with our spring concerts. The spring Scholastic Book Fair is a buy one, get one free event, so it's a good chance to load up on literature for a very reasonable price! The Book Fair will be open in the afternoons after concerts and school until 2:15.

There are several other fun activities we have coming up this spring at Sunnyside as well, so stay tuned!

The Apex Fun Run was a Success!

Thank you to everyone who participated in our spring fundraiser! Because of the generosity of our Sunnyside community, we raised just over $14,000 for our Innovative Learning Fund. This fund helps pay for things like field trips, special events, unique classroom activities or supplies, and more. Students had a blast participating in the Fun Run event, and enjoyed the daily motivational lessons from the Fun Run team as well. A special thank you goes out to all of the volunteers who helped with the event. We appreciate it!

2023 - 2024 Kindergarten Registration

Spread the word! Now’s the time to start thinking about registering your child for kindergarten! Registration for the 2023 - 2024 school year kicked off with an in-person kindergarten registration help session on Thursday, Feb. 9. If you missed the session, don't worry! Enrollment forms are now available in print at the District Office, Colvill Family Center, and Sunnyside School. Forms can also be found online at www.rwps.org, and may be returned to any of the locations listed above. We encourage you to register early, as this helps us determine staffing needs and get class placement information out earlier!

Red Wing Arts Student Art Show

The Red Wing Student Art Show will take place at Red Wing Arts in the train depot (418 Levee Street) from March 3 - April 1, 2023. Red Wing Arts has proudly presented the Student Art Show for the past 30 years. This special exhibition showcases a wide variety of artworks by K-12 students, including some of our very own Sunnyside students. Please join them in celebrating their creativity!

February Winger Pride Winners

On Wednesday, March 1st, Sunnyside announced our February Winger Pride winners. Students receive Winger Pride tickets when staff catches them working hard to be safe, kind, and/or responsible, and their ticket stubs are placed in grade level buckets in the front lobby display. At the end of each month, we draw four winners from each grade level, each of whom gets to pick a prize from the prize menu. February grade level Winger Pride winners are:
  • Royal Keller (kindergarten)
  • Jayde Brown (kindergarten)
  • Brayden Twardy (kindergarten)
  • Lennon Bjornstad (kindergarten)
  • Skyler Sofe(1st grade)
  • Quentin Fuller (1st grade)
  • Ryland Weinmeyer(1st grade)
  • Kenzie Fine (1st grade)

Spring Conferences

Sunnyside Elementary Parent Teacher Conferences will be held Tuesday, March 7th and Thursday, March 9th. We are once again using an online sign up for conferences called PTCFast.com in grades K - 5. We are hopeful this system will allow you to better choose a time that meets your needs. To sign up, click on the link below or copy and paste it into your web browser. Simply follow the prompts to register and choose a conference time. Sixth grade will once again be holding conferences a little differently, and those teachers will be reaching out directly to families with details. Conferences will be held in-person, though online conferences are available for those who prefer them. Please contact your child's teacher directly if you are interested in that option.

https://ptcfast.com/schools/Sunnyside_Elementary_1

***Per district procedure, we have one 15-minute conference time available per student. It is imperative that parents/caregivers who are connected to the student are receiving the same information and planning together, as a team, how to best support the student. Please contact the Sunnyside office at 651-385- 4570, if you have any difficulty signing up for a time.

Third Quarter Progress Reports

The third quarter of schools will come to a close on Thursday, March 23rd. Progress reports were originally scheduled to be sent home with students after spring break. However, after discussion, Sunnyside teachers have indicated they'd prefer to complete the informal progress reports a bit early so they can discuss with families at conferences next week. Official report cards are only completed at the end of Semester 1 and Semester 2, so a less formal progress report will be provided this quarter. Specials (Art, Music, PE, & STEM) are only graded at the semesters, since they only meet with students one out of every four days.

Lost & Found

Sunnyside's lost & found is filling up quickly again! With conferences and concerts coming up, this is a great time to take a swing by our lost & found off the lobby in the first ramp to see if you recognize any of your child's missing clothing.

PE Teacher Resignation

Recently, Sunnyside's physical education, Mr. Gillman, chose to resign for personal reasons. We have a wonderful substitute, Mrs. Zimmerman, who is filling the position for us until we are able to hire a permanent replacement. Welcome, Mrs. Zimmerman!
