Racing to Learn: Students follow the Iditarod
Students in Carrie Johnson’s, Rick Baumann’s, and Tara Swenson’s classes are following the Iditarod for a class project. There is a 103 foot (to scale) Iditarod Trail in the hallway and each student has “adopted” a Musher. Students track their racer’s progress each day of the race. In addition to the numerous curricular activities that have been tied in from books to research, students will also Skype with former Iditarod racer and John Beargrease winner, Blake Freking. Freking will share his experiences and expertise with the students. Finally, each student will create a dog sled using popsicle sticks and other items and then race the sleds down a “hill” while learning about friction, force, motion, and energy.
The trail is up!
The trail is 103 feet long in the hallway (1:50,000 scale) and is complete with over a dozen checkpoints marked out.
Each student chose a musher to follow through the race. They made "trading cards" of each musher that included a picture and
