News and Notes from Wagner Elementary

Read Across America Week!

Wagner celebrated Read Across America Week this past week. In addition to dress-up days that were themed with various Dr. Seuss books, students continued participating in word puzzles known as Wuzzles, spontaneous D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) times, and recognized World Read Aloud Day on Wednesday, March 5th.

World Read Aloud Day

World Read Aloud Day was Wednesday, March 5th. Wagner celebrated by hosting nine guest readers including Gophers (and former Olympic) Volleyball Coach Huch McCutcheon, Education Minnesota President Denise Specht, Rep. Dean Urdahl, Mayor Johnson, Officer Nelson, Joe and Nancy Paddock, and Andrew Broman and Jenny Berg from the Independent Review.

All of the guest readers were terrific and the Gophers were even so excited about it that they wrote their own blog post:

Racing to Learn: Students follow the Iditarod

Students in Carrie Johnson’s, Rick Baumann’s, and Tara Swenson’s classes are following the Iditarod for a class project. There is a 103 foot (to scale) Iditarod Trail in the hallway and each student has “adopted” a Musher. Students track their racer’s progress each day of the race. In addition to the numerous curricular activities that have been tied in from books to research, students will also Skype with former Iditarod racer and John Beargrease winner, Blake Freking. Freking will share his experiences and expertise with the students. Finally, each student will create a dog sled using popsicle sticks and other items and then race the sleds down a “hill” while learning about friction, force, motion, and energy.
