NOTES FROM ADMINISTRATION
FOOTBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
WHS is offering a student bus for the state FB championship game next Monday, Nov 21. Students can sign up for the bus in the main office. Students who ride the bus will get reimbursed for their ticket to the game. Since all tickets are on-line, you will have to buy your ticket on the go-fan app prior to the game. This is a great deal---free ride to the game and reimbursed once you get on the bus. The departure time for the game is 5:15 p.m.
Westside High School has implemented random hall sweeps throughout the day in order to limit traffic and noise during instructional time. Students are expected to be in class or an approved open-mod space by the time the bell rings to begin the mod. For students leaving the building with an off-campus pass, we will allow around 2 additional minutes to get to the main entrance to leave. Our ultimate goal is to eliminate unnecessary hallway traffic during class time and improve our overall academic environment. Students that are caught in hall sweeps are subject to a before or after-school detention.
HOMEROOM
Students are reminded that homeroom attendance is required on a daily basis. We have seen an increase in absenteeism and tardiness to homeroom and we wanted to make sure that all students understand that they need to be in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing.
1ST SEMESTER GRADES
Teachers will submit 1st semester grades by the end of the day on Wednesday, January 4, 2023. At this point in time, report cards will be emailed home to families.
POST PROM
Westside High School has a long tradition of holding a Post-Prom event immediately following Prom. Due to Covid this has not occurred since 2019. We are looking for a junior or senior parent(s) to chair this event and bring it back for Spring 2023!! Parent volunteers are also needed to secure the venue, sell tickets, secure donations and prizes, check in students and 'chaparone' the event, etc. Post Prom is a fun, safe event and all juniors and seniors are welcome to attend, regardless if they attend Prom. If you are interested in chairing the event or learning more, please contact Jenny Meyerson; jcmeyerson@gmail.com.
WHS SERVICE LEARNING DOCUMENTATION IS GOING VIRTUAL
Coming soon, Westside High School will be moving to the x2VOL platform for students to record their required service learning hours for graduation. Moving to x2VOL will allow students to log in to a personalized account and log their hours without filling out a paper form. At the present time, WHS is setting up student accounts and merging all previously earned hours into the system. Once this is completed, students will learn how to log into their x2VOL account. Once we have fully implemented the system, Westside High School will import service learning hours into PowerSchool on a quarterly basis so service learning hours show up on student transcripts. Stay tuned for more information.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Seniors and parents should check out the Scholarship Newsletter put out by the WHS School Counseling Department on a regular basis to see what scholarships may be available for Westside students.
On your radar (November):
The December ACT is the last opportunity for your scores to count for most regular admission deadlines. The December 10 ACT and December 3 SAT are the last national test dates used for priority scholarship consideration.
Make sure to submit official ACT/SAT scores to your universities. Determine if your university requires test scores by going onto www.fairtest.org. Please note: AP Scores are self-reported on your application and official scores are required by the university after you are accepted.
If you have a college interview scheduled feel free to contact your counselor to discuss the interview in advance.
PARENT & STUDENT ANNOUNCEMENTS
40 DEVELOPMENTAL ASSETS
The Boundaries & Expectations Category of Developmental Assets
Learning the difference between right and wrong
Boundaries are important to young people because they give clear messages about what’s expected. By the same token, caring adults who expect young people to do their best help them to learn good judgment. Every day young people face many options and choices. Boundaries and expectations provide young people with the support they need to choose wisely. Boundaries and Expectations is one of eight asset categories that make up Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets, the qualities, experiences, and relationships that help young people grow up healthy, caring, and responsible.
Here are the facts
Research shows that the more young people have clear, consistent boundaries and high expectations, the more likely they are to grow up healthy. Search Institute has identified six assets in the Boundaries and Expectations category that are crucial for helping young people succeed: Family Boundaries, School Boundaries, Neighborhood Boundaries, Adult Role Models, Positive Peer Influence, and High Expectations.
Tips for building these assets
Start with your own self-awareness: Are you self-disciplined? What are your expectations for yourself? What was expected of you when you were young? By considering these questions, you’ll be better prepared to talk with young people about them. Modeling responsible behavior is important when establishing boundaries and expectations. Provide clear messages, appropriate consequences, and realistic expectations.
Also try this
- In your home and family: Involve your child in family meetings to discuss family rules and what happens when the boundaries are violated. Compare with boundaries in other places where your child spends time, and work to provide consistency.
- In your neighborhood and community: Practice responsible behavior at all times to help young people understand why it’s important. Make a point to monitor the behavior of all young people you come in contact with—not just your own children.
- In your school or youth program: Work with young people to set boundaries and rules within your school or program. Post a written set of rules in visible places: hallways, classrooms, lunchroom, or a gymnasium.
