Valentine's Treats
As we approach Valentine’s Day, it is important to ensure that all homemade candy, desserts, baked goods, or other edible items are not sent into school. Students are permitted to bring Valentine's with store bought candies that are individually wrapped (no nuts please). Please know that taking this measure will help us maintain a safe environment for all students with allergies, etc. You can help us protect your student(s) by requesting that they not eat anything given to them by another person, anything that they have not brought from your home or anything not in its original sealed package.
Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping all of our students safe at school!
Principal's Update-It's a long one!
Today I want to share the school's progress this year according to iReady. iReady is an adaptive program for Reading and Math that Fulton County has used for years. This program has assessments that students take up to 3 times a year to inform teachers about what concepts and skills students have mastered and what they are ready to learn. There is also a teaching component to iReady that adapts the lessons and pace according to how students perform in the program. It is recommended that students spend between 45-60 minutes per week completing iReady lessons in each subject. Students will get the majority of this time during the school day, but teachers may ask students to complete lessons at home as well. Please note, it is not recommended that students spend hours at home on iReady. There can be too much of a good thing.
Now for the data. The iReady diagnostic gives students a scale score and assigns them a color code based on their performance. Students in the green (Tier 1) are considered on grade level, yellow (Tier 2) indicates that a student has some gaps and is performing below, but within one year of their grade placement. Students coded red (Tier 3) are performing 2 or more grade levels below their current placement.
You can see from the images below that our students have made tremendous progress this year. We have increased the percentage of students performing on grade level from 50% in math at the beginning of the year to 71% as of December. Likewise, we increased on grade level performance in Reading from 65% to 81% in just a few months. We are very proud of our students and teachers for their hard work first semester. We will continue supporting and challenging students throughout 2nd semester so that the vast majority of our students will end the year on grade level.
At the risk of this message going too long, I want to share one more piece of data. iReady also measures student progress on Annual Typical Growth and Stretch Growth. Annual Typical Growth (ATG) is the amount of improvement a student is expected to show during an entire school year. Most students should achieve this goal by May. Stretch Growth is the growth recommended to put students who placed below grade level on a path toward proficiency and students who placed on grade level on a path to advanced proficiency levels.
Nationally, only about 20% of students meet stretch growth measures by May. These are aspirational targets.
I am proud to share that only 1/2 way through the year we have 12% of our students already meeting their stretch growth in Math and 29% in Reading. This is exciting data!
Take a look at the images below for more specific information about the data described above.
Please note, this information is used by the teachers to adjust instruction. If your child's teacher has concerns and feels that your child needs additional support, the teacher will reach out to you directly.
Thanks for hanging with me through all that.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Haga, Proud Principal

Camp Invention® is coming to Wilson Creek Elementary School!
In partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame® (NIHF), Wilson Creek Elementary School is excited to offer the nationally acclaimed Camp Invention® program to children entering K through 6th grade. This inspiring, weeklong summer experience provides opportunities for open-ended, hands-on exploration of science, technology, engineering and more! Taking on a variety of exhilarating activities each day, children have fun collaborating with friends, thinking creatively and inventing their own solutions to real-world challenges.
The week begins on June 12, 2023 with Ashley Pence serving as Director. The all-new 2023 program, Wonder, will spark the imagination of both new and returning campers with an adventure full of inspiration, innovation and unforgettable discoveries!
During this action-packed, confidence-boosting program, young innovators will:
- Design and build their own mini skate park, customize their mini skateboard, and practice persistence as they take on ramps, bowls, rails and more
- Transform a robot into a one-of-a-kind stuffie while exploring genetics, finding inspiration in nature and taking pride in their individuality
- Take on the role of event planner as they design a grand celebration, invent a Party Assistant, and create a light-up party hat and bubble art banner
- Launch their own pop-up business while building entrepreneurship skills, making smart financial choices, using green energy and attracting customers
The first 40 students to register will receive a Camp Invention Keepsake Toy (Pop-It Keychain, Pencil Pouch, etc.)
Early registration discounts available! Register using SUM25 by March 30 to save $25, or SUM15 by May 12 to save $15 off the $275 registration fee.
