Holiday Party
We will be having a class party on Friday, Dec. 18. We will be doing a breakfast in the morning and then a movie in the afternoon. Mrs. Shepherd is helping me organize the breakfast and will be calling parents for food and to volunteer in the next week or so.
Language Arts
This week was a review week for language arts.
- Reading: We focused on identifying the main idea in non-fiction text. We also reviewed writing a summary of the text.
- Writing: We worked on prewriting and the rough draft for our explanatory essay.
- Grammar: We reviewed prepositions and idioms.
Math
This week in math we started learning how to multiply a 2-digit number by another 2-digit number. We started with multiplying tens and estimating products using rounding and compatible numbers. We also used area models and partial products to help prepare for multiplying with regrouping.
Science and Social Studies
- Science: This week in science we learned about the structures animals use to support movement. We also learned about animal instincts.
- Social Studies: We continued our study of the Southeast region. We learned about the different types of musics that originated in the region like bluegrass, dixieland jazz, blues and cajun. We also learned about the Jamestown settlement in Virginia.
Christmas Collection
In the past I've always had the students collect a donation for an area nonprofit instead of a gift exchange. This year I'd like to collect a small monetary donation for a gas card to give to a local family. The family is in need of assistance to off set travel costs due to medical issues. I'm asking that each family donate $3-5 by Dec. 11. I'll reward the students with Christmas cookie decorating on the 18th for their generosity and donations.
Camp Wolverine
We've set our camp dates for Thursday, Jan. 14-15. We will be heading to our annual 4th grade overnight at Wolverine Camps. I know many parents would like to help chaperone the even so I wanted to provide you with these dates. If you would like to go with us to camp I need to know before we leave for winter break.
Mrs. Kowalski and I are sending home the information about camp in this week's Friday folder. The cost of camp for students this year is $65. Through our fundraising efforts and a generous grant from Harbor Springs Education Foundation we are able to cover $40 of the cost. We are asking that students pay $25 for camp. We would like the money turned in by Jan. 5.
Upcoming Dates
- Dec. 9 - Christmas concert @ 7:30 - Mr. Byma would like students in the green room at 7:20.
- Dec. 18 - Last day of school before break
- Dec. 21-Jan.3 - Winter Break
