Tigard High (CE)2 Alternative Reaches 50-Year Mark
May 19, 7 PM in the Tigard High School Commons
"A nationally-known alternative learning program at Tigard High School is celebrating 50 years of success with a reunion at the school Thursday, May 19 at 7 p.m. Graduates, families, employer partners and former staff are expected to attend. Named CE2, the acronym stands for Community Experiences for Career Education.
Thanks to federal support in 1972, Tigard Tualatin School District was the site of original testing for the model which rapidly spread to over 100 schools across the country. Researchers at Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory in Portland evaluated and documented the innovation in Tigard to train others how to do it and many came to view the program first-hand. The Tigard High program now enjoys a custom-designed space in the recently-remodeled Tigard High.
The CE2 learning model centers on students discovering the realities of careers. They select hands-on internships with local employers willing to share how academic and social skills are vital to job success. CE2 graduates receive the same high school diplomas as their peers and go on to colleges, apprenticeships and other options. They are not paid for the internships. Many Tigard CE2 graduates give the program credit for their immediate success in dozens of blue collar jobs and white collar careers alike, including owning their own businesses. Over the years, some 300 local employers were involved.
Director of the CE2 program at THS is Tony Hunt thunt@ttsd.k12.or.us. Tualatin High School later adapted the same model when its new facilities opened twenty years later."
