Principal's Message
WMS Family,
What a great time for Fall Break! Our WMS students and staff have been working hard this first nine weeks of school and deserve time to re-energize and reconnect with family. Now that we are all settled in here on campus, several needs have become apparent. The most glaring need is centered around classroom technology for students.
We currently have six Chromebook carts on campus and the waiting list for teachers to reserve those extends beyond six weeks. Our goal is to double the current amount of Chromebook carts that we have on campus, which would give WMS a total of 12 Chromebook carts that would be available for use by ALL STUDENTS as our teachers facilitate modern 21st century classroom instruction.
Below I have listed the exact figures for six additional Chromebook carts (30 chromebooks per cart) in the hope that you will consider donating to the WMS Annual Fund to help us in procuring this technology. If you are willing to donate, please note that your donation is specifically for “WMS Chromebook Carts”.
Chromebook: $354 per Chromebook
One Chromebook cart: $798
Single license for a Chromebook: $24.50 per Chromebook
Total price for one complete Chromebook cart with licenses for 30 Chromebooks- $12,153.00
Total Price for six (6) Chromebook carts: $72,918.00
Although everyone may not have the financial means to contribute, this cost breaks down to $44. 46 per student. Any support you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
We hope that you all find this break as a time to spend with you children and we will be here with ENERGY, ENTHUSIASM, and ENCOURAGEMENT when they return! The next newsletter will be sent on October 18th.
Wishing you all a fun, safe, and restful break!

Special Note from Our Nurse
A Parent's Need to Know
Ms. Garcia's goal is for each WMS student to be safe and well during the school day and to receive prompt attention if medical problems arise. Students who are feeling ill during class can be sent to the clinic by the teacher. Those who have more serious problems, such as bleeding, vomiting, high fever, convulsions, and migraines will be taken care of immediately.
Fever
For a student with a fever of 100 degrees or higher, the parent/guardian will be notified of need for child to be picked up. It is recommended for the student with a fever not to return to school until fever free for 24 hours without the need of medication for the fever.
OTC (Over the Counter) medications are not available in the clinic.
All medicine MUST be brought to the clinic by an adult with the appropriate medication form. Some chronic conditions require a completed packet that includes a medical plan. The forms can be found on the Nurse’s web page in the Helpful Documents tab or can be filled out at the clinic when dropping off medication. PLEASE do not place medicine in a child’s backpack as this can be a life threatening mistake. The district medication guidelines are very specific and can be located on the district website in the student/parent handbook.
Immunization documentation is not negotiable. Humble ISD must be in compliance with Texas Law. Please respond promptly when notified of immunization discrepancies so that children do not miss any educational time. We realize that this can be a time consuming errand; however, we must show documentation to the state, when requested, regarding our students’ health records for everyone’s safety.
A child must go home for specific reasons stated in the handbook under several sections (ie. Health Related Matters, Illness, etc.). A doctor’s note stating "may return to school" is required upon returning to school, if they are suspected of having a communicable disease or skin rash of unknown origin. See Health Related Matters>Communicable Disease in Handbook.
Please update the nurse of any change in medication, diagnosis, or illness that your child may have during the school year. Correspond by email, phone, fax, or stop by the clinic.
Our goal is to expedite healthcare to promote maximum instructional time…thus learning!

PSAT
Dear 8th Grade Parents/ Guardians,
All eighth grade students enrolled in a Humble ISD schools will be taking the PSAT 8/9 test on Wednesday, October 16, 2019.
What is the PSAT 8/9 Test?
The PSAT 8/9 is the first in the College Board’s “SAT Suite of Assessments” and is offered to eighth and ninth graders. The purpose of the PSAT 8/9 is to establish a starting point in terms of college and career readiness as students transition to high school. It’s a way for students to practice for the PSAT 10, the PSAT/NMSQT, and the SAT. The test is multiple choice and is timed. The test will be administered on Wednesday, October 16, 2019.
The PSAT 8/9, like the PSAT 10, PSAT/NMSQT and SAT, has three testing areas: Reading (55 minutes), Writing and Language (30 Minutes), and Math (No calculator section= 20 minutes and Calculator Section= 40 minutes). WMS will provide calculators for students on test day. Each test assesses the academic skills that students have developed over the years, primarily through their course work. These skills are considered essential for success in high school
Prepare for the 2019-2020 PSAT 8/9
Sincerely,
--Lisa Campbell, M. Ed.

Want to make math class easier? Can you spend just a few days of the week on 30 minutes of math? Using online resources students can build a stronger foundation in math and not fall behind over the break!
Online Resources: MathANTICS - https://mathantics.com/ - Free video lessons for all the topics!!!
Khan Academy - https://www.khanacademy.org/ Sign up with your Humble ISD google email and keep track of your progress!
Online Textbook: my.mheducation.com If your teacher assigns online homework and you have any missing work, the break is a great time to get caught up. Print incomplete or late assignments, and complete it then turn it in after the break!
Important Math Concepts: All Grades including Algebra continue to depend on: Integer, fraction and decimal operations!
6th Grade: Students are currently learning to multiply and divide fractions. The understanding of fractions is an important concept and will continue to be an important skill through middle school and beyond. If students struggled with integer operations in our previous unit this is SUPER important as they move on!
7th Grade: Emphasis in the current unit in 7th grade math is on ratios, rates, and percentages! MathAntics has excellent videos on all things percentages! (and still fractions!)
8th Grade: Check out MathAntics videos under the headings Algebra Basics - Parts 1 and 3. 8th Grade Math has already covered Equations and Linear Functions. These topics are the building blocks of 8th grade and high school math.
Algebra: Students should now have a strong foundation as this first 9 weeks ends. Students have covered solving equations, inequalities and linear functions. MathAntic videos can also help students who might be struggling with any of these foundational concepts. Algebra Basics including basic mathematical concepts with integers and fractions continue to be important for student success!
