Numbers and Impact
According to the survey, 86% of the responses lived in a single home and 80% of them used an automatic sprinkler to water their lawn. About 13% of those people watered their lawn for about 20 or more minutes, which could've caused some runoff to their water source and lead to a muddy, blackish/brownish outer edge of the water. From there, 13% of the people fertilized monthly which could've cause nitrate pollution to the water, and it is possible that leaching in the groundwater could have occurred. When nitrate levels are above 10 ppm in groundwater, it can cause blue baby syndrome, which can be very harmful to newborn babies. If people are going to use fertilizer, they should not run their sprinklers more than 20 minutes, so the chemicals won't run off into the water and cause many problems.
