PK 4.3 - Weekly Newsletter
Dear families,
PK4 has rocked this week learning and discovering new things about rocks! We have focused on what kind of people work with rocks and what are some ways they use rocks. We talked about
- Geologists and how they study and discover rocks.
- Road constructors and how they use rocks to build roads, houses and bridges.
- Sculptors and how they build big and small statues.
And we also watched a clip that showed us the way humans use to live a looong time ago. Everything made out of rock and natural resources!
Role playing "The 3 Little Pigs" was one of the highlights of the week. I made costumes and brought props for them to represent and act out the story, as we learned about how bricks (made out of cement/mixture of rocks) are the best material to build a "huff and puff proof" house!
Kids were excited to show and tell some of the rocks they found with you and we talked about differences and similarities among them and the ways we can sort them (by size and their texture).
You are still welcome to come and share if you have a rock collection, unusual items made from rocks, or an electric rock-polishing machine or if you or someone you know might be willing to talk with us about a hobby or job related to rocks, such as making jewelry, rock climbing, or working in a quarry or mine. We appreciate anything you can do to help us learn all that we can about rocks. Please do not send anything of great personal or financial value.
What you can do at home?
Last Week we suggested going rock hunting and collecting rocks around your neighborhood. This week you can use these rocks to make fun games with your child at home. While playing, you can encourage them to use English to describe them (talk about the rock’s color, shape, size and texture) and also using critical thinking to solve problems. Here are some examples of what games you can play:
- Tic Tac Toe (mark X’s and O’s on rocks)
- Hopscotch
- Rock Balancing/ Rock stacking (the higher tower wins the game)
- Create a Rock maze
- Measuring things around the neighborhood with rocks
Next week we will be learning about the origins of rocks, what are they formed and where do they come from as we will also celebrate 35 years of ISP!!
Objectives of the Week:
- Uses classification skills
- Uses number concepts and operations
- Participates cooperatively and constructively in group situations
- Demonstrates knowledge of the alphabet
- Demonstrates emergent writing skillsHave a wonderful weekend!
