Principally Speaking
The second semester is well under way, and I want to thank you for your continued support of our students and staff as we collectively strive to provide optimal opportunities for learning every day. I reviewed mid-year assessments and am proud of the academic growth our students are showing. Parent-Teacher Conferences were held this past week, and it was a great opportunity to reflect on and celebrate your child’s progress.
In addition to conferences, February is also the time of year we begin preparing for the 2019-20 academic year. Our Kindergarten Round-up will occur on Tuesday, February 26 at 6 p.m. We are asking for your help in identifying all children who will be eligible to attend kindergarten in the fall. If you have a child or know of a child who will be five years old on or before August 31, 2019, please contact the school office at 856-3700 or complete the kindergarten survey found on our school’s homepage (www.usd231.com/o/sunflower). Your support in helping us identify students so we have a good estimate of the size of our incoming class is invaluable!
In closing, your diligence in having your student at school on time and well prepared for learning each day is appreciated. Continue to be mindful the academic day lasts until dismissal each afternoon. It is important students not be dismissed early unless an unavoidable appointment, illness, or emergency is involved as valuable instruction from the teacher will be missed. As always, thank you for supporting the wonderful teaching and learning happening at Sunflower Elementary!

Nurse Notes
As we enter into Fall/Winter, it is a great time to remind our school community of the measures we take to keep students healthy and prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
We reinforce frequent hand washing with our students and coughing/sneezing into a tissue or their sleeve (not their hands). In addition, we refer to the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment (JCDHE) recommendations when determining the need to send a student home from school. The JCDHE recommendation chart provides specific guidance on when a student can be readmitted to school. For example, students are to be fever-free for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of a fever reducing medication before returning to school.
As needed, we will inform parents when we see an increase in illnesses in our school population with the potential for rapid spread among students and staff (such as Influenza) or in the rare instance we have a mandatory reportable disease occur in our population, like Mumps. General head lice notifications are not recommended as they have been found to cause harm and lead to unnecessary treatment. Instead, the school nurse will assess the need for notification on an individual basis to those considered close contacts.
Thank you for reinforcing healthy habits with our students. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Nurse Haney at (913) 856-3719.
1st Grade Athletes of the Month
Parents,
I have a bulletin board dedicated to “Athletes of the Month” and want to add your child’s picture to it! I am asking that your 1st grader bring in a picture of them being active, this can be them playing a sport, riding their bike or skateboard, it could even be them playing tag or jumping rope. I just want to see kids up and moving! For the month of February, I just need pictures of 1st graders and the other grades will be in months to follow. If you need to email it to me, that’s fine too! My email address is engemannc@usd231.com.
I can’t wait to receive your child’s photo! Each child will get their photo back at the end of their designated month.
Thanks,
Mrs. Engemann
(your child’s PE teacher)
