Athletic Update
High School Cross-Country: The cross-country athletes are improving in their times and their race confidence weekly. We are approaching the midpoint of our season and the kids are right where they need to be at this point in their training. Our varsity boys/girls teams won 1st @ the Rio Grande Invitational on Aug. 12th, 2nd place teams @ the TM Invitational on Aug. 20th, 1st place team champions at Border Olympics in Laredo on Aug. 27th, and most recently ran and competed extremely well at the FEAST Patriot invitational in San Antonio on Sept. 3rd where we faced several teams from our region. We are really excited about how the boys/girls teams are competing, but also want to highlight our athletes who have been shining individually. On the boy's side, Jr. Isaac Wright has been leading the pack. He's been the overall individual champion and hit his all-time personal best of 17:05 in the 5k this weekend @ FEAST. Other high-quality boys to keep an eye out for are: Fr. Aden Tunchez, So. Antonio Valadez, and Sr. Morgan Ramos. On the girl's side, Fr. Kenli Atwood and So. Victoria Diaz is leading the pack by a landslide. They have been overall champions weekly, and are currently leading our district standings individually. Our #3-#5 play a huge role in our team wins and these girls have also been dominating and improving weekly: Fr. Aubrey Garcia, So. Elizabeth Kohler and So. Brenda Rios. A large group of our kids also participate in band, volleyball, football, cheer, and/or strutters, so we are very blessed that our kids love to actively be a part of multiple activities AHS offers. We are finishing up our 2nd phase of training this week and are looking forward to starting phase 3 for the next 4 weeks. Phase 4 is "peak season" where our athletes will be in a position to compete to the best of their abilities at the end of the season. For JV/Fresh that is a district, and for Varsity that is region & state. We run at West Guth Park this Saturday @ 8:00am and will travel with our team of 40 to compete at the Odem Owl Invitational.
High School Volleyball: Volleyball (7-16): Varsity Volleyball lost games at Skidmore-Tynan and Banquete last week. Our Road Warriors will play one more non-district game tonight at Sinton, JV/FR play at 5:30 PM, followed by Varsity at 6:30 PM. This Friday, Volleyball begins District Play against Kingsville in our Teacher Appreciation Night. Teachers can show ID to receive free admission and popcorn! Varsity plays at 4:30 PM, followed by JV/FR at approximately 6 PM. Varsity Volleyball traveled to Laredo for the Longhorn Fest Tournament last week. Although we lost the first couple of games, we responded strongly to finish with a couple of wins and take home the Consolation Championship.
JV Volleyball (7-7) lost against Skidmore-Tynan last week and went 2-1 in the San Diego tournament, finishing in 3rd place (see attached pic).
Freshmen Volleyball (4-3) beat Skidmore-Tynan last week and finished 1-2 at the San Diego tournament.
High School Team Tennis: Team Tennis had the meet rescheduled with Kingsville last week due to rain. We will host West Oso and Tuloso-Midway for our first matches this week.
High School Football: Varsity Football (1-1), JV Football (1-1), and Freshman Football (2-0). We are incredibly excited to get our 2022 football season going. We felt like our summer session and fall camps were the best that we have had in the last few years. We had a total of 131 high school students come out for football this season. Currently holding 48 on the varsity, 38 on the JV, and 45 on the freshman teams. We started the season off on the road for two weeks with scrimmages at CCISD Cabaniss West vs Miller on the 11th of August and Ray on the 18th of August. We were extremely proud of the growth of our teams over those two weeks. We opened the season off with a game vs Corpus Christi King. We are proud to say that we had a clean sweep that week winning 28-0 on the freshman level, 32-0 on the JV level, and 49-7 on the varsity level. In week two we played CC Veterans Memorial where we didn’t play as well as we were hoping to. We finished that week 1-2 with a 42-28 win on the freshman level, 14-8 loss on the JV, and 35-0 loss on the Varsity. We will be traveling to Victoria on Friday for a matchup vs another 5A Div1 opponent.
Middle School Athletics: (Cross Country) Last Thursday, Middle School Cross Country traveled to Flour Bluff. 8th Grade Boys finished 1st and 7th Grade Boys finished 2nd. Top 8th Grade Finishers were Oscar Lozano (Boys, 7th) and Emilia Valdez (Girls, 15th). The top 7th Grade Finishers were Alexander Ponce (Boys, 2nd) and Juliana Farias (Girls, 12th).
