PEAK Curriculum
THEME
Students began the year with a look at how "the amazing brain" works. The kids were fascinated by the concepts of plasticity, intellect (especially genius), the teenage brain, and the baby brain. This month, we'll dig deeper into a variety of other brain topics. We will also review how to find reliable resources for research and how to take good notes.PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
Team Challenges are an important part of our Personal Growth and Development curriculum. These challenges help students develop an appreciation for their own skills and abilities (as well as those of their PEAK classmates) by requiring them to think creatively, collaborate wth one another, and communicate effectively to complete a given task. Many of the photos included in this newsletter are from the ABC challenge we completed this week. Ask your PEAK kiddo to tell you all about it!
MATH
This year, we're offering more choice and voice in math! To start the year, students chose to participate in one of 3 groups: algebra, problem solving, or math competition. The algebra and problem solving students took pretests to determine their "just right" math levels. They then began working on lessons designed to meet their individual needs. The competition group began working on practice problems to prepare for their test in November. We'll continue our work in these groups throughout the next few months before moving on to additional choices. The engagement in math has been spectacular!
ELECTIVES
In an effort to let students take charge of their own learning and independently explore an area of interest in a hands on way, PEAK is getting in the maker spirit for the first few months of the school year! We're offering students choices that include sewing, coding, movie making, engineering, logic, and more! In just the first few weeks, the kids chose their electives, designed a plan, and began working. The buzz of excitement and engagement in our PEAK classrooms is awesome during this time of day! This month, we'll continue working on our electives and begin doing some self reflection as well.
Emotional Intensity in Gifted Children
Emotional Intensity in Gifted Children
Helping gifted kids manage complex and intense emotions can sometimes be draining for parents! I particularly like how this article explains emotional depth as a component of giftedness and then talks about how to nurture it.

Volunteers:
I am still looking for a Thursday sewing volunteer. This elective will run through October. We meet 12:40 - 1:30.
Also, if you have a special topic/skill that we did not list in our parent survey and you would like to share with the kids - please let me know!
