Academically Speaking
Reading:
We have completed our study of Author’s purpose and its relation to text structure. This week, we took the Acuity Reading assessment which provides questions structured similar to those students will complete on the MAP. Our results show we need to continue using details and clues from text as a base to answer questions. Students also completed the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) assessment which measures students’ comprehension of text at various levels and assigns them a Lexile score. At the end of this week, we began our whole class Book Club study of the book Because of Mr. Terupt. As we read through this book, we will be discussing and analyzing characters and the lessons they learn throughout the text.
Science:
Students have been busy investigating the properties of saturated solutions. Students have learned about saturation, over-saturation, solubility, insolubility and density. Ask your child(ren) about the different substances we have made solutions out of in class. Next up for us, learning about sun, moon & stars, as well as the water cycle.
Math:
The students have just wrapped up their unit on dividing problems involving decimals. We are starting on our last unit before winter break on “Numerical Expressions, Patterns, and Relationships.” Students will be learning to use variables in equations, the order of operations, and recognizing patterns in a data table. This will be one of the two topics recorded on 2nd quarter grade cards. Keep up the practice on Reflex to get those math facts down!
If your student is not understanding the homework here are two great resources for them to watch at home:
