In Case You Missed It:
I met with all grade levels and the EC team to discuss EVAAS roster verification last week. Grade levels have until Tuesday, May 1 to complete. EC will have through Friday, May 11 to complete their figures.
I'm excited to report that approximately 250 Stallions have applied to be in the AVID elective for next year. This is double the number we had apply last year. AVID interviews became a school-wide responsibility a couple of years ago. This year our 6th grade team interviewed rising 5th graders at Spring Open House. Our counselors completed those interviews last week by visiting our elementary schools and meeting with those that were unable to attend or didn't have enough time to be interviewed. Our Site team chose April 30 - May 4 as the week to interview at SanLee during planning times. Rising 7th and 8th graders not in AVID will be interviewed by our 7th and 8th grade teachers. Our elective team will interview all those that are currently in AVID and want to return. Counselors sent information to everyone involved last week and have narrowed all interviews to Wednesday, May 2. Please see an AVID site team member or counselor if you have any questions and thank you all for supporting this school-wide goal to prepare all students for whatever future they choose!
Counselors will follow up after interviews with teachers of those that applied and ask for recommendations. PLEASE complete, be honest, and remember AVID elective targets students in the academic middle needing a boost to prepare them to be in advanced courses which will prepare them for college. AVID students must have a desire to do well and succeed. They need more support though tutorials, being in a group of like-minded students, weekly lesson which teach WICOR, and constant monitoring by a focused elective teacher to help them reach their full potential.
Thank you to Sarah Barker, Bilingual EL Success Coach, has organized a lunch catered for us by San Felipe Restaurant in our PLC room to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
According to The History Channel on April 28, 2018:
"Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. Cinco de Mayo 2018 occurs on Saturday, May 5. A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations."

Students receiving ESL services will also be having a celebration with Mrs. Barker and their parents after lunches on Friday. Mrs. Barker will notify the appropriate teachers with specific details.
A week of changes:
Katie White, 8th grade Social Studies, and husband will be relocating to Washington, DC this summer.
Will Trombley, STEM/Technology Education, and wife will be relocating to Wyoming this summer.
Katie Gomez, 7th grade Math, has resigned effective May 25 and will be pursuing a different career path.
I believe I speak for all when I say how thankful I am to have had these Stallions as part of our family and wish each well as they move into the next chapter of their lives.
