AP Language and Composition 11

Fall Updates

News and Updates for AP Language families

It's hard to believe that we are almost at the end of the first marking period. The marking period ends on Friday, October 21 and grades will be finalized by Wednesday, October 26. We've had a difficult start to the semester but I am so proud of our students and the way they have built a community in their classes.

We've spent the past eight weeks building a strong foundation for analysis and writing and we will spend the next three marking periods applying those skills in a variety of reading and writing situations. I know that I'm looking forward to learning along with our students. The second marking period will bring a study of the creative process featuring the musical, Hamilton, and a study of the American Dream featuring The Great Gatsby.

As part of studying Hamilton, I've asked our students to try and watch Hamilton's America airing on PBS next Friday at 9:00 pm. There is a second showing on Sunday, 10/23 at 2:00 pm. I know there will be some students who do not have access to cable during the viewing times and I am hoping that we can get someone to record the show for us. If you can help with that, please email me. I hope that you can view the documentary with your student. I am a fan of this musical and the many ways that it can be taught in our classroom.

We will also be starting our independent reading projects in the second marking period. I hope that these projects will spark some exciting conversations in our classroom and at home.

As always, please let me know if there is anything that I can do to support your student. I've enjoyed getting to know this group of kids and I'm impressed by their ability to think critically.

College Search and College Visits

The fall of the junior year is a great time to take advantage of starting the college search. Many college visit LAHS in the fall and these visits give your student a great overview of a college without leaving our campus. We also recommend that students and families visit the College Fair in Albuquerque this Sunday. The college fair is a great opportunity to mee with admissions representatives from all over the United States.http://rmacac.org/college-fairs/fall-college-fair-in-albuquerque-nm/

Impact Aid Survey

All families, even if they are not Lab employees, must fill out this form for our future school funding. The first class to turn in all of their surveys before the Monday, October 24 deadline receives a donut or chocolate party.
