An Important message from the Principal
Dear SPB Families,
I hope that this message finds everyone healthy, safe, and well. First and foremost, I want to thank everyone for your support and patience as we continue to make decisions in the best interest of our students and faculty/staff. There has been a substantial surge in COVID-19 cases throughout Northeast Ohio and, specifically, Cuyahoga County. As a result of our Responsive Return Plan, we constantly evaluate everything we do at Saint Paschal Baylon. The present circumstances are no different.
COVID-19 has presented many challenges this year. With the number of cases rising over the past few weeks in our school community and beyond, we had to consider our plan moving forward with the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks. There are so many factors to consider: the health and well-being of our students, the effect a larger number of students participating remotely (due to quarantine) has on the classroom learning environment, whether we can handle several teachers in quarantine and still have in-person classes, and the impact of remote learning on parents who work outside of the home. The Cuyahoga County Board of Health (CCBH) issued a comprehensive advisory to combat this spread, the directive advises that schools move to fully-remote learning following Thanksgiving and through Winter Break. This advisory is a recommendation to guide the county through the holiday season where larger gatherings and get-togethers are common practice. Consequently, Saint Paschal Baylon has given great consideration to the directive.
After careful consultation with Susan Herman, the principal of St. Francis of Assisi, and Matthew Tabar, the principal of Corpus Christi Academy, our pastor, Father Lane, the Diocese of Cleveland, and the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, we have elected to continue remote learning for one week following Thanksgiving Break, Monday, November 30th through Friday, December 4th, as well as following Christmas Break, Monday, January 4th through Friday, January 8th. Our goal is to return to in-person learning on Monday, December 7th through Friday, December 18th. Prior to the return to school following each of the remote learning periods, further discussion and deliberation will take place to evaluate the present status of the school and community, and any changes to the aforementioned plan will be shared with you in an appropriate and timely manner. The safety and security of our students, families, faculty, and staff is priority number one. We truly desire to continue in-person education at Saint Paschal Baylon, but we can only do so with the cooperation, collaboration, and communication with and from our students and families.
Please consider the following practices to ensure the health and safety of our school and our community:
Adhere to the travel advisory for the sake of your neighbor
Observe the statewide curfew to the best of your ability
Safely Celebrate the Holiday Season for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve
We also know that there are some families who plan to continue remote learning between Thanksgiving and Christmas which is certainly allowed. We simply ask you to notify the office and your child’s teacher of your desire. Please know that this decision was not made lightly. Again, thank you for your support and cooperation during these challenging times.

COVID-19 Travel Advisory
With Thanksgiving next week, we have heard that families may be traveling out of state. We need your help to ensure that we can offer in-person learning safely. If your family travels to a state that is on the Ohio Department of Health's COVID-19 Travel Advisory List, it is recommended by ODH that your child quarantine for 14 days upon return. Your child can move to online learning during this period. We need families to take this responsibility. The states on the list have a positivity rate of 15% or higher. The list of states is updated every Wednesday. The most recent one can be found here. Thank you!
I want to offer my services as a tutor to all K-8 SPB students FOR FREE until we return to in class learning (and should we ever go remote again later in the year as well). Availability is first come first served (and that may change as students may not need a tutor on a "regular" basis). I can tutor any subject and any grade level (I am a certified teacher; and, while my certifications are P-12 Music and 7-12 Integrated Mathematics, I can tutor all subjects). If you would like more information, please let me know (firstname.lastname@example.org). I created a SignUp Genius "page". Here is the link:

Blood Drive-Sunday, November 22nd
St. Paschal Baylon will have its next blood drive on Sunday, Nov. 22nd, from 8:00am to 1:30pm in the Eymard Room. Blood donors are always ESSENTIAL . . . and the American Red Cross makes this an opportunity to earn money for our school, as well! SPB School will receive $10 in grant money for every unit of blood collected at this drive.
Because of the restrictions on gathering size (due to COVID precautions), all donors are asked to schedule appointments in advance. This can be done online at: www.redcrossblood.org/give (sponsor code: stpaschal), or by calling 1-800-RED-CROS. Walk-in donors may be taken if there are time slots available, but you may be asked to return at a later time. Face masks and social distancing will also be required.
All donated blood is tested for COVID-19 antibodies, and results will be available to you via your donor account. (Please note this is NOT a diagnostic COVID test! Anyone who feels ill or thinks they may have been exposed to the virus should stay home!)
Donating blood is a great way to help both our community and our school. Please give blood if you can!
Advent Wreath Blessing
adapted from the Book of Blessings, 1528
Lord our God,
we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ:
You are Emmanuel, the hope of the of the peoples.
You are the wisdom that teaches and guides us.
You are the Savior of every nation.
let your blessing come upon us,
and this wreath,
as we light the candles during this Advent Season.
May the wreath, its light, and our faith
be a sign of Christ’s promise to bring us salvation.
May Christ come quickly and not delay
to bring peace, joy, hope, and love to our world
and those most in need.
Through Christ our Lord.
(for meals and other times)
Come Lord Jesus! Maranatha!
look kindly on us
as we await the coming of the Christ.
Bless our homes,
and unite us to all people everywhere
who wait for the coming of your Son Jesus Christ.
Help those who will go hungry this day.
May this season bring peace, comfort and joy
as we share our love with everyone.
Come Lord Jesus! Maranatha!
5th Grade Parents-We Need YOU!
We are asking that each family (mom, dad, grandma, etc.) choose at least two days to volunteer each time slot being 11:15 am-12:50 pm. There are many, many time slots open! We are so grateful for the help!
This is a great way for you to interact with your child and his/her classmates during the school day! Recess Volunteers should arrive to school at 11:10 and check in at the office. Duties will include supervising students at recess, escorting the students to and from the school doors. Volunteers will be with one school staff member each day to help direct.
Remember that after your two volunteer time slots, you are done for the year, as each month is assigned to a different grade.
COVID-19 Volunteer Protocol: all recess volunteers are required to wear a mask and complete the Visitor Self-Screening form when they arrive at school.
Thank you again for your time and service to the students and teachers of SPB! Simply click on the following links to sign up: Grade 5
