The Glee of Issue Number 3

So many wonderful things have been happening around our district since Issue 2 of the GPS District Digest. Autumn is upon us with the temperatures slowly dipping (especially as we leave for school in the morning), the leaves have started to turn, and our athletes are all in for the fall sports seasons.

Don't forget to pass along your photos, news, and notes with us so we can share it with the entire GPS community!

Enjoy Issue 3!

Outstanding Community Partners

GPS was the proud recipient of the “Outstanding Community Partner” award this past Saturday by Greenwich Communities, a team of dedicated professionals committed to providing the ability to live in quality, affordable housing in the Town of Greenwich. They have told us that the Board of Education received this award because of our dedication to feeding the children in our communities who could not attend classes during the pandemic last school year. The commitment of our Food Services Director Dave Nanarello and his entire staff has not gone unnoticed from our wonderful community partners.

The Creative Element

Did you catch the new documentary short, “The Creative Element,” on YouTube yet? It follows three music teachers from around the globe explaining how music technology helps their students engage with the creative process and make the music that matters to them. It features our very own music teacher, GHS' Dr. Barbara Freeman and her students, with footage from 2018.

Dr. Freeman tells the film makers, "We all teach music. It just looks a little different depending upon what we have in our hands."

Recent GHS graduate, Oliver Polica, said: "This class is actually a dream."

GHS' electronic music class has been taught since 1967!

Twitter Tuesday

On Tuesday, Glenville's superstar mascot, Snappy, took over the GPS District Twitter account for an entire school day to give parents a fun behind-the-scenes look at a day-in-the-life of Glenville students and staff. The gator sat in math class, participated in PE, visited with the school custodian, and was even treated by the school nurse.

LWV of Greenwich

Are you familiar with the League of Women Voters' of Greenwich, a 501(c)(3) nonpartisan organization? Although they do support issues from time to time, they never support any political candidate.

This election year, their mission is to improve turnout in Greenwich municipal elections. They tell us that in 2017, the turnout was 30%, in 2019 it was 33%. They believe that parents, Greenwich newcomers, and daily commuters are underrepresented in that number.

Download your 2021 Voter's Guide today.

The LWV are hosting three upcoming events, all over Zoom, that they recommend family participation as they all could impact school issues. You can get the Zoom link by registering on their website. All videos will be on their website afterwards, so those who cannot attend can see them there.

Honor Roll

A big congratulations goes out to Mary Keller for being named to News12 Connecticut's State of our Schools Honor Roll. Our supervisor of school health programs, who has been with GPS since 2001, has been recognized for her devotion to the welfare of the entire Greenwich school community with loyalty, compassion, and dedication. The next time you see her, don't forget to thank Mary and her staff for everything they do for us!
