Lowell Lions Roar!
November 2018
From the desk of Mrs. Larva
Welcome to November. This season is a wonderful time to give thanks for the many blessings in our lives. I am certainly thankful for the opportunity to work with the amazing children, parents, teachers, and staff at Lowell Elementary.
I would like to extend gratitude for the many volunteers that have given Lowell assistance since the start of the school year: from running our book fair and providing childcare during conferences, to dressing up as book characters and sharing a love of literature, and all of the other events in between. Our PTA is our foundation in which we operate business at Lowell. Please thank our PTA members when you see them!
Our PTA is seeking the following items from the generosity of our families. These items will be used to put together our annual Harvest Baskets that will be distributed to Lowell families in need of some additional support during the holiday season.

A note from the Nurse's Office
There is a handful of cases of head lice at Lowell. Be aware that head lice is less contagious -- and less harmful -- than the common cold. Here are a few other facts about head lice that you may not know:
Lice do not spread easily. They also cannot survive more than 24 hours off a human scalp.
Lice cannot jump. They can only crawl, and as a result, most transmission is only by direct contact. The spreading of lice can happen through the sharing of brushes and hats, but the easiest way lice spread is by head-to-head contact.
Children do not need to be sent home from school for head lice infestations. The American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines recommend letting the parent of the child know about the lice diagnosis, but refraining from sending the child home that day or restricting him or her from attending school. A child with head lice has likely had the infestation for at least a month, and studies have shown that lice are not likely to spread within classrooms.
Lice affect people in all socioeconomic classes. Lice often carry a social stigma, and in reality, it’s not a reflection on cleanliness. Anyone can get lice! If children are excluded from school and activities, this perpetuates the belief that lice are harmful.

The presence of head lice on a child is confidential. Do not hesitate to contact the Lowell Health Office if you suspect your child has head lice. We are happy to educate and provide resources on prevention and treatment. And remember….

Read this comical book about a boy and his mother trying to figure out how to get of those little buggers! You will find out that they are not that easy to get rid of.
Feeding Local Kids
Give Where You Live
Many Duluth Public School classrooms and student organizations have chosen to participate in this fourth annual community event.
Nationally, one in five of our children experience hunger. Hunger impacts every aspect of a child's life: learning, adequate sleep, relationships with peers and community members. In a nation with a surplus of food, we have the means to provide healthy food for every one of these hungry children. Sometimes it is an issue of supporting established programs that provide food to those in need.
One-third of the people served by CHUM's Food Shelf are children. While the children who are enrolled in our schools have access to breakfast and lunch programs throughout the school year, and through much the summer, they have a need to be fed on weekends, too. In order to address hunger levels on weekends, Second Harvest developed a system to provide identified children with food - the Backpack Program.
To help address this issue at the local level, the Duluth Federation of Teachers and Duluth Public Schools have partnered with CHUM and Second Harvest Food Bank to garner community donations of coins to help feed local kids.
Coin banks have been placed in classrooms at Lowell for donations.
Donations should be delivered to classrooms by Wednesday, November 7th. A final count will be publicized within two weeks of the event.
Any donations for Feeding Local Kids in the form of checks must be made out to either CHUM or Second Harvest.
Donations should be returned to school by Wednesday, November 7th. If donations come in later than that, we will gladly accept them, and will make arrangements with individuals to get them to the collection site.
Contact Anne Krafthefer at AnneKrafthefer@gmail.com for additional informational.
Thank you, Harbor Pointe Credit Union, for your generous donation to underwrite the cost of materials for Feeding Local Kids!
A Thank You...

What if there is a change for the end of the day?
We ask that you contact the school early in the day if you need to make a change to your child's after school routine. It is best if you directly contact your child's teacher with a note in the morning. Please do not depend on voicemail or email communication with the teacher as they may not get a chance to check these forms of communication while working with children. If you are unable to reach the teacher, please contact the school office before 1:00 PM with the change request.
