ConVal High School Happenings - May 21, 2021
Message From Principal McKillop
Mental health continues to be a focus here at ConVal as we celebrate mental health awareness month. This week, Mr. Todd Bennett of the school counseling department shared thoughtful insights with the school community about strategies to deal with some common mental health issues. These actionable suggestions were a soothing way to help our community ease into their days.
We had a very successful career fair this past Monday, with students engaging with potential employers in meaningful ways. It was awesome to watch our students climbing the ladder of the fire truck and connecting with hiring managers, modeling the career readiness skills they'd been learning.
We were happy to hear the exciting news from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and the Foundation for New Hampshire Community Colleges regarding their generous gift to graduating seniors. We hope many of our students and their families will consider taking them up on this amazing offer!
We are moving into a very busy part of our year, with lots of significant events and big celebrations. I'm excited to join the members of our community in marking these milestones while still enjoying the everyday wonders, like seeing students engaged in outside classrooms and taking time to connect with students in the hallways about their after school plans. I look forward to heading out to the fields soon to support our students as they compete today. There's a lot of wonderful things happening here at ConVal this spring, and I feel fortunate to be a part of it.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Heather

Counseling Information/Update
The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and the Foundation for New Hampshire Community Colleges
The NH Charitable Foundation and the Foundation for NH Community Colleges have teamed up to offer a gift for the class of 2021: a free course at any of the state’s Community Colleges this fall. For more information on this gift to the class of 2021, please visit: https://givenhcc.org/ClassGift/
Mental Health Awareness
Thursday the 20th was the national Mental Health Day of Action. Taking action to support our mental health can mean different things for different individuals – anything from finding a therapist or joining a support group or program, to reaching out to a friend or scheduling a yoga class. For ConVal High School students, it could mean checking in with their school counselor or our student support counselor. The school counseling department would like to share an outstanding resource that can help identify a variety of options for action depending on what an individual is feeling or experiencing: https://www.mentalhealthishealth.us/.
Senior Scholarship and Awards Night
ConVal will be hosting the Senior Scholarship and Awards Night on Wed. June 9th at 6:30 pm. Invitations for the event are being sent - only students receiving an academic award or scholarship at the event will receive an invitation. Families will need to RSVP for the event by June 2nd via a link provided in the invitation. This is an outdoor event. Due to its proximity to graduation, there will not be a rain date for the event. Instead, if the event is cancelled due to weather, students will be recognized via a virtual ‘event’ that will go live at the same time on the high school website.
Underclassman Awards
ConVal will be recognizing 9th-11th graders via a virtual underclassmen awards event that will go live on the high school website on Wed. June 2nd at 6:30 pm. Students that are recognized will be able to pick up their award either in class the following day, or in the school counseling office. We will notify students and families ahead of time if they will be receiving a recognition so they can be sure to tune in!
Athletic Information/Update
It’s hard to believe that there is only one week left in the spring sports regular season! Spring sports schedules can be found at ConVal Regional High School, and the state championships will be starting soon. Just a reminder that the use of masks outdoors will be limited to occasions when physical distancing (3 feet) cannot be maintained.
Future Cougars
The baseball, softball teams, and track teams from Great Brook School and South Meadow School competed on the high school fields and track this week. The baseball and softball teams will play at the high school again on the 26th at 3:00 PM. Good luck to all of our future Cougars in these events.

Community Assistance Programs
Please see the below links and information for community assistance:
A local group of family service providers, a few churches, a town administrator, and a few community members have formed a small coalition called the Eastern Monadnock Housing Security Coalition. We came together with the hopes to meet the needs of immediate housing for families. We looked at how MATS started and realized that their first shelter was a popup shelter in a church, so we created a how-to handbook The Emergency Pop-up Shelter Handbook . We have one church in Jaffrey that is converting a space in their church, and we are hoping that some other churches will do the same. Our coalition meets every Tuesday at 1:00. If you have any questions or interest, please call Lisa Rogers at 603-547-0604.
