My name is Ruth Daugherty and I teach high school Special Education in the LIFE Department. LIFE stands for Learning Information with Functional Education: my students’ curriculum focuses on functional academics and life skills. A huge part of their curriculum is learning money management and banking skills to prepare them for life after high school. To help them practice these skills, we use an online simulated banking program. Students receive weekly “paychecks” based on class attendance and assignment completion that are deposited into their online checking account. At the end of each month, they are given “bills” to calculate and pay, and then are given choices for how they want to spend the rest of their money. We offer different kinds of incentives and hope to offer more as we build the program; students use the remainder of their earned money to “buy” small items that we mail to them. We don’t have a budget for this, so we very much appreciate the contribution of the PTSO to our stockpile of incentives J Thank you all for your support of our kids!
