Expanding houses???

What is happenning when a house is making awkward sounds in fall?

When a house cracks it usually means that the wall on the outside of your house are shrinking because the air inside the house is taking less space. While the walls on the outside are shrinking, the walls on the inside are not. So the walls outside are making noises when they move around the walls on the inside to find their new shape while the ones on the inside keep the same shape/size. Also the walls inside the house are connected to the walls on the outside. So when the outside walls move, the inside walls also have to move so they crack while trying to stay with the outside walls.

What is happenning when a house is making sounds in spring?

Usually it happens in the spring because the air is getting warmer and when air is warmer it takes more space. But the walls do not leave enough space to let the air inside the house expand and take more space because they don't move or leave more space. That is why the walls on the inside stay exactly the same while the outside walls slightly change shape so when the outside walls move and scratch the inside walls of the house, they will make a scratching noise and that is what is making awkward sounds in spring. Also like in the picture above walls on the outside expand while the walls on the inside stay the same size so you have the walls on the outside of your house pulling the walls on the inside.
