Ag in the Classroom

for Vermilion County

Welcome Back!

With September winding down, I think it is safe to say many of us are back to the swing of the school year, while (possibly) missing summer break. I am excited to offer 30 minute ag lessons to kindergarten through fifth grade and I would love to give each and every teacher in the county a much needed break to breathe! If your class has not signed up yet, it isn't too late! Simply email AITC.VCFB@gmail.com to set up a time and date!

Fall Festival at Brooks Farms

AITC is very excited to be teaming up with Brooks Farms in Fairmount and the Salt Fork FFA Chapter to bring an exciting Fall Festival to the pumpkin patch. There will be pumpkins and gourds, a petting zoo, make-and-take STEM pumpkin catapult, as well as many photo opportunities!

When: September 24th

10 AM to 2:30 PM

13841 N 600 East Rd.

AITC Grant Opportunities

Make sure you don't miss out on our grant opportunities! Both our project and book grants are fantastic ways to bring any aspect of agriculture into your classroom!

You can apply for the grant(s) and find our Get-a-Grant Workshop recording and resources for ideas to use the grants in your classroom here: iaitc.co/grant22

FREE Classroom Resources

The Vermilion County Farm Bureau offers many free resources to class room teachers to support their agriculture and science lessons.

Class Presentations are a great way to incorporate topics into class discussion with little to no additional work for the teacher. These lessons activities are planned, supported, and instructed by the Ag Literacy Coordinator. (Recommended for kindergarten through 5th grade.)

Thematic Units are boxed lessons that come with most supplies a teacher would need to provide a hands on learning opportunity to their students. Topics range from Illinois agricultural themes to hydroponics and machinery. These kits can be checked out for two weeks at a time while the larger kits are a 4 week period. (Recommended for kindergarten through 8th grade)

Ag Mags are a 4 page, colorful agriculture magazine for students. They contain information about agriculture topics, photographs, classroom activities and careers. Many of these printed resources are also available in an interactive format.

To request lessons, units, or Ag Mags, please email: AITC.VCFB@gmail.com

AG LITERACY COORDINATOR

My name is Missy Buhr and I am so excited to begin another year as Ag Literacy Coordinator for Vermilion County! I was born and raised on a hog farm in south central Indiana, where my family also grew corn, wheat, and soybeans; not to mention cows, chickens, children and the occasional pet. After graduating from college, I married my husband Andy, and we now live on a grain farm in rural Gifford with our two children.

I have been a second grade classroom teacher for six years and have over seven years experience at the preschool level. I am looking forward to combining two important roles that I love—agriculture and teaching.

I am eager to share this adventure with your students and look forward to meeting you very soon!

Cheers!
