Guy de Maupassaunt
Guy de Maupassant was born on August 5, 1850 in France. His parents were both from wealthy families. When he was 11, his mother separated from his father at a time when it was considered disgraceful to become separated. His mother was the most influential person in his young life. She enjoyed literature and reading stories to Guy. In junior high his mother encouraged him to make the acquaintance of a famous writer by the name of Gustave Flaubert. He became friends with Gustave who continued to mentor him throughout his life and guided him through his writings. He wrote several short stories throughout his life and became wealthy. In the short story The Necklace, he wrote from the perspective of someone who wanted to be wealthy and wanted to belong to that circle of wealthy friends. He understood all that came with that wealthy lifestyle and was able to explain what the main character Mathilde, desired so badly.
