Talley LINKS Students Receive National Recognition in the Continental Math League (CML)
On May 16th, the LINKS students, parents, and teachers at Talley came together to celebrate the students' hard work, perseverance, and some tremendous accomplishments, including achieving national recognition in the (Continental Math League) CML math competition - AGAIN!
CML is a math problem-solving competition that requires above-average reading comprehension and analytical reasoning capabilities. Talley students competed against other schools on the same grade level from all over the United States.
The 3rd-grade team placed 1st in DeKalb County and 3rd in Georgia.
The 4th-grade team placed 1st in DeKalb County and 2nd in Georgia.
For the second year in a row, the 5th grade team placed 1st in the ENTIRE UNITED STATES. In addition, this team also placed 1st in Region 4 (which consists of Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas).
While CML is a team competition, the league also recognizes some individual students. Edward Li (member of the 4th-grade team), Kat Kolesnikova, and Ethan Whalin (members of the 5th-grade team) all earned national recognition as individually placing first in their respective grade levels. Edward, Kat, and Ethan all earned perfect scores on all 5 meets throughout the year. Nationwide, Edward is one of only ten 4th graders to earn this recognition, and Kat and Ethan, are two of only twenty 5th graders in the United States.
We are so proud of these students, their motivation to learn and consistently excel, and their ability to collaborate with their peers! 6 Houses, 1 Talley!
Top Dog Award Winners
Our Top Dog Award Winners this week are Lateefah Mosley and Susanna Shewan!
Lateefah Mosley, Assistant Principal at Talley Street Upper Elementary School, received this nomination from a colleague:
“Ms. Mosley is a new AP at Talley who has embraced the role completely. She is detail-oriented, empathetic, and knowledgeable, and she has a wicked sense of humor. Ms. Mosley speaks to children in a way that simultaneously holds them accountable and empowers them. She communicates incredibly well with staff, and she is able to make important decisions quickly. We, at Talley are incredibly lucky to have such a caring role model in such an important position. Thank you, Ms. Mosley!”
Susanna Shewan, Gifted Intervention Teacher at Glennwood Elementary School, received this nomination from a parent:
“Shout out to Ms. Shewan of Glennwood Elementary! This year our family has been using the morning carpool line more than we have in previous years to drop our youngest daughter off; maybe it's work overload and having three kids at three different schools. The other morning we sat in line on a particular rainy day (that was preceded by multiple cold rainy days) and watched as Ms. Shewan greeted every child and parent by name. When it was our turn to stop and talk, before turning down the slope to the drop-off area, she remembered that it was my daughter’s birthday the weekend prior and asked how it was. (To boot, the week before my daughter’s birthday she remembered and sang to her!!!) She was her usual upbeat self. Even on a cold rainy morning when she could have found a number of things to complain about she was positive and cheerful."
"When I think of what makes Glennwood so special, it’s, without a doubt, the teachers. Glennwood has so many teachers that shine. They go above and beyond to show kindness and connection to kids and parents. Every morning I watch her welcome the Glennwood community and it warms my heart.”
Way to go, Lateefah and Susanna!

Teacher Appreciation Spotlights
Our teachers make a difference in the lives of our students everyday. Their dedication and hard work does not go unnoticed. Has your teacher made a positive impact on your education? Has your child’s teacher shown dedication and compassion for your child? Click here to share how a teacher has made a positive difference. Teacher appreciation posts will be posted on our social media channels throughout the month of May.
Extra Mile Awards
Students: Do you know a teacher or CSD employee who has gone “the extra mile” this year? Nominate them for the CSD Extra Mile Award! The Extra Mile Award is an annual award that allows students to show appreciation for the teachers or staff they feel go above and beyond what is expected of them.
Students (not parents) at any grade level can write an essay describing how their teacher (or staff member) goes the extra mile (parents can help younger children write the essay). The essays should be detailed and describe how the employee goes above and beyond.
Click here to submit a nomination. The deadline is May 31.
These awards will be presented at the CSD Opening Day Celebration in July.
