Zion Building Program Update
March 2018
The Purpose of the Building Program
The purpose of the current committee for the building program at Zion is to:
- Fulfill the Great Commission - By improving our campus, we can impact the effectiveness and efficiency of how we operate as a church and school for our existing members and those yet to come
- Continue the Legacy - Those that came before us at Zion were faithful with their gifts and resources, providing this place of worship, education, and sharing the gift of God's salvation
- Unite the Body - It is our hope and prayer that the entire body of Christ at Zion can come together as we work as one to carry out this project
We ask for your prayers towards the project as we all seek God's will. A defining question for our project is, "Is God in this?"
Zion is blessed with a rich history and tradition. Three years ago, the Invest and Invite Campaign showed strong support for expanding the physical facilities at Zion. Last year, the congregation directed the Building Committee to re-ignite the plan to build. Survey and meetings conducted demonstrate continued support for church and school expansion. The combined building and site improvements will enhance Zion's service of spreading Christ's love and salvation to current and future members.
Capital Campaign Status
- Initial pledges of $3.85 million were made in May of 2015
- $2.8 million has been received to date
- $773,000 has been spent to date on the new classrooms, architects fees, etc.
- Once the project is more definite, there will be another opportunity for existing and new donors to invest in the project
Project Details
- narthex improvements
- multi-use worship facilitiy
- parking
There are also several required infrastructure updates that will be required no matter what project is pursued: extending the 8-inch water supply line, ADA upgrades, improve east side ingress and egress points onto FM 1105, and septic upgrades. These will have to be included in budgeting for any project.
What is a "multi-use facility?"
Purposes:
Many uses of this proposed facility have been identified. One of the main uses would be a space which would accommodate excellence in modern worship services. This same space would be a great resource for performing arts events such as programs, plays, and concerts for both the school and the church. In addition, the space could be used for receptions for funerals and weddings, and a venue space for special events, family reunions or use by clubs and organizations. Other possibilities are space for Sunday school, after school care, an early childhood program, office space and meeting rooms.
Location
The committee looked at several locations on the campus and narrowed it down to two with the most promise. One South of the current sanctuary where the parsonage is, and one replacing the Camp Swift portion of the school. There are obviously many advantages and disadvantages to each location. For a photo of the locations and a full list of pros and cons of the two locations, please see the presentation to the voters meeting on February 25 http://www.zionwalburg.org/download_file/view/1192/ Based on these considerations, the building committee recommends the south, parsonage location. We feel this option will come much closer to falling within our budget at this time. This would also allow the possibility of replacing the Camp Swift section of the building in the future for school expansion.
Next Steps
Our next steps will be to solicit more congregational feedback through open forums, begin the interview process for architects, refine the design, and vote on a final project towards the end of summer. We appreciate all of your input and ask again that you help us cover the process in prayer so that God's will is carried out as we look forward to Zion's future.
