Leverty Letter
· Dedication of Carlos Huertas-Juarez Buddy Bench
· Dogs on Campus
If you’ve been out on our playground lately you’ve probably noticed a new addition to our buddy benches. On Wednesday, September 5th the Huertas-Juarez family joined the staff and Joe Forbish for the commemoration of the Carlos Huertas-Juarez Memorial Buddy Bench. Our 4th grade friend, Carlos passed away last school year and we wanted to remember him in a special way. Carlos was known for his compassionate and friendly demeanor, his welcoming smile, and his inclusive disposition, so it is only fitting that a buddy bench, where children meet and form friendly relationships, act as a memorial. We welcome you to sit on Carlos’ bench and reflect on his legacy. Joe Forbish, the artist and metallurgist who created the bench for Montclair represented Carlos by incorporating his favorite color red, his initials into the design of the butterfly, and a beautiful lily for each year of his life. We are so honored to have this buddy bench serve two purposes, forging friendships and remembering Carlos.
From one dog owner/lover to another, I know the temptation to have your furry friends join you as you walk to school is real. I too would bring my lovable Oliver to school during summer months to keep me company. That was until the district passed a no dogs policy. I was sad, but I get it. In keeping with our practices of providing a safe zone for all, we ask all families to keep their dogs at home when visiting the school. We’re never sure when a furry friend will come in contact with an allergic human friend, or possibly get scared and snap in defense. The only pets allowed on campus are service animals. Thanks for understanding this policy and helping keep everyone safe.
Have a wonderful day!

Absences/Attendance
The state is labeling as "truant" any child who has four or more unexcused absences in a series of 20 days. The state will be tracking the number of "truant" students for each school and school district.
If your child is ill, be sure to call the attendance line within 24 hours of their absence, 503-356-2191 or call the office after 8AM. Otherwise, the absence will be listed as unexcused. Please note according to Oregon state guidelines, student absences due to family vacations are considered unexcused. Keep in mind that unexcused absences will result in automated phone calls and emails.
We appreciate you support of your child's regular attendance.
Fun Run 2018
We are excited to announce that our annual Fun Run will be on Friday, September 28. Every student can participate in this event, both by running and asking their family, friends, and neighbors to support their efforts with a financial donation. This is a terrific opportunity for our children to feel they have a part in earning money to support their school. All of the funds earned are used by the PTO to support our teachers, fund field trips, technology, PE, supplies, and library needs.
Pledge envelopes will be coming home soon; be sure to check your child’s backpack! If you’re interested in volunteering for the Fun Run, please sign up on myvolunteer.com. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Shahleena Weller, Theresa Moreschini, or Audrey Boyle.

The school office hours are 8:00 AM-4:00 PM. Please call the attendance hotline, 503-356-2191 before 9:00 AM if your child will be absent or late. If we have not heard from you, the Autodialer System will call to make sure your child is safe. You will get a phone call and email if your child is absent and unexcused.
Classes begin promptly at 8:30 AM. For you child's safety, students can arrive at school at 8:15 AM, when staff supervision is available. (Please DO NOT arrive before 8:15 AM.). The only exception to this is if your child will be having breakfast here at school, the cafeteria is open at 8:00 AM for those students.
