February - March news! 2016

Spring is here! The months of February and March seemed to fly by! So much has been happening in our Learning Commons. We wrapped up our Snowflake project, unboxed our Polar 3D printers, celebrated Presidents' Day, Leap Day, and Dr. Seuss's birthday! Our Polar 3D printers are printing nonstop.

Students in 3rd - 5th used visual blocks to build code for snowflake designs. They did an amazing job! Pictured below is an image. Click on the link to go to the Padlet wall.

3D Snowflakes!

Our Polar 3D printers are printing snowflakes nonstop!

This was the culminating activity to the Science Behind Snowflakes unit. Before printing snowflakes, students had to learn "What is 3D Printing?". We watched and heard and felt 3D printed objects. We learned about the four main parts of a 3D printer. The X, Y, and Z axes, build plate, the filament - PLA, and the extruder.


Students used Morphi app to design their snowflakes. 3D modeling is a very difficult skill to learn; believe me. Morphi makes it easy for beginners. The students were able to start designing immediately due to how simple it is to use.

In March, we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Here are some of the Seuss themed stations we had in the Learning Commons. We had so much fun!

  • Get students excited about the library space and learning.
  • Give students opportunities to work on engaging tasks.
  • Provide spaces to work collaboratively, think critically, and creatively.

Also, to transition to a place where students DO stuff, not simply a place where students GET stuff.
