Message from our Principal
Kia ora tatou, Mālō e lele, Ann yeong haseyo, Ni hao, Dzień dobry
Last week was Culture Week at Pinehill School. Our students and families are from a multitude of over 38 different ethnicities. Culture Week provides us with an opportunity to discover where we are all from, a little about others’ culture, to learn about each other and to celebrate the rich diversity at Pinehill School.
‘Once you understand and appreciate other people’s cultural backgrounds, then you can also connect with them more.’
A big THANK YOU to the many parents and whanau members who have given time to come into classrooms and share aspects of their culture. Our children have been treated to your cooking, sharing of artefacts, storytelling, language teaching, games, music, art work and more. This home school partnership has enriched the Culture Week learning experiences immensely, providing much authentic learning for all.
Both our Cultural Parade and shared lunch on Monday this week, were a huge success. It was very special to see everyone dressed up in clothing to represent their culture, both modern and traditional. A big Thank You to Alastair Rogers for the Cultural music performances from the Marimba Group and to Alastair and Lisa Everett for their support and organisation with Kapa Haka Group. Both performances were enjoyed by all to open the concert. A big Thank You also to Natalie McAllum for organising the Chinese Dancing Lions (from Northcote College) and Korean Fan Dancers group (from Rangitoto College) to perform at the Parade. This was a huge hit with our students and families and a fitting way to conclude our parade. Many students, as well as staff members, have commented on the food they were able to try and eat during the shared lunch. The overall consensus is that it was the best lunch ever! We had a phenomenal turn out of families at the parade and lunch, over 200! Thank you for celebrating Culture Week with us and for your amazing and continued support.
He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata.
What is the most important thing in the world? It is the people, it is the people, it is the people.
Maths Week
This week is Maths Week at Pinehill School. And what a fantastic week it started out as! There have been many exciting events and challenges that have taken place so far. On top of the classroom and team Maths Week challenges, there has also been a daily maths problem posted on our TV station. It has been wonderful seeing the students persevere to work out solutions to these problems either individually or in groups. We have also been fortunate to have the maths fairy visit this week. Fairy Veldman is visiting all classrooms with challenging maths problems to be solved and prizes. The children are having to do a lot of thinking and strategising to solve the problems. Fairy Veldman has been very impressed with the maths thinking in all the classrooms visited so far. A big thank you to Marg Milne, Caitlin Blackwell, Kirstin Blanchard and Lisa Everett, Christine Johnston, Wendy Chatterton and Ji Reh Yoo for leading us through Maths Weeks. This is definitely an annual highlight!
Lay By, Pick up at 3:00pm
We have made some slight modifications to our Lay by pick up area process at 3:00pm. We are constantly reviewing our processes and practice to ensure our students safety is our top priority. We have had some students and staff ‘act out’ the pick up process and this video is being shared with classes this week. We encourage everyone to view the video at home as a family and talk about the Lay By pick up process. Key points include:
Children being picked up will gather on the grass verge between the two orange cones
Parents stay in their cars (no parking or leaving the car)
As cars leave, please pull up to the car spaces and move towards the front of the line, to ease congestion
Children walk down to your car
Please do not stop and park the car right beside where your child is waiting, they will walk down to you
Driveways and the other side of the road with yellow lines can not be used to park and pick up your children as per the NZ Road Code

We have noticed the heavens open at 3pm quite regularly lately. The rain has been very heavy and the children are often left soaked. If your child has a rain jacket, please support them with getting in the habit of packing this each day. Rain jackets/coats seem to work better than umbrellas, particularly when the wind is blowing the rain sideways. Thank you for supporting us with the Lay By process to keep our children safe.
Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini
Success is not the work of one but the work of many.
Ngā mihi nui,
Carla Veldman, Principal

Mindfulness
Our sharing this week comes from Room 6. They have been reminding themselves that we all can feel red zone emotions sometimes and that this is normal. The important thing is to realise when you are in the red zone, and actively do something to calm yourself and reset. This is great advice for everyone.
Below are some ways that Alice, Angela and Lillian reset themselves so they move back into a green zone emotion. Thanks for sharing, girls.
What are some of your ways to reset? Share some with your whanau so they can see that even adults need ways to reset their emotions and that we all have different ways.

Room 13 had Dahamlee's Mum come in to talk to us about Sri Lanka. Here are the stories that we wrote afterwards.

Our planting out day is scheduled for Friday 12 August. We are very grateful for the parent support we have received to make this day happen. There will be an information and safety briefing in the hall at 8:30am in the morning before we leave. We would really appreciate all adult helpers attending this meeting. We can organise carpooling at this meeting too.
