US Counseling & Advisory Newsletter
3 December, 2021
"Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all the other seasons." - Jim Bishop
The above quote describes how November and December feels, due to the number of holidays that we continue to enjoy. 🎃 Even so, we were able to cover some very important topics in both our Advisory and Counseling curricula.
Freshmen and Sophomores began the month of November reviewing the Email Tips and Tricks presented in October, and also began the SMART Goal series of activities that will continue into December. Additionally, they also enjoyed an interactive Child Protection Assembly presented by their Counselor as well as a Student Council Assembly presented by the executive student council.
Juniors and Seniors continued delving into the topic of Diversity and the Black in Madrid series, as well as participated in an Email Tips and Tricks workshop presented by Mr. David Hotler. College Counselors also conducted a special workshop for Seniors who were interested in studying in the Netherlands.
We invite you to go over this Newsletter and check out our new section on Celebrating Our Achievements.
In this video Grade Level Leaders Mr. Terrance Dillon for Grade 9 and Ms. Susi Francey for Grade 10 speak on their Advisory objectives for November and going into December. Students will be learning how to construct and achieve their own SMART GOALS.
Student Council Assembly
Mr. Alexander Lyvers and the Executive Student Council ended the month of November with a fun assembly for students of all grade levels.

ASM COLLEGE COUNSELORS IN AMSTERDAM!!!
Our college counselors Marj Southworth and John McCracking went to Vrije (VU) University in Amsterdam. While in Amsterdam they also visited the University of Amsterdam. This was the first conference they were able to attend since the COVID pandemic began.
They went for 2 days in November and toured the University of Amsterdam with a few other College Counselors from Madrid. The tour was given by a third year communications major who also shared information about her program and other related aspects of student life at the university. The student also emphasized the lack of housing for students in Amsterdam.
Then at Vrije University in Amsterdam, our college counselors attended a day and a half conference. The purpose of the visit was to know and understand the programs offered at VU. They also received a tour of that campus. They were given information about the application process, had an opportunity to ask questions, and had a multi-cultural understanding workshop sponsored by the international admissions office at VU.
These tours strengthened the relationships between ASM and Universities in the Netherlands. This also allowed our college counselors to make connections with University reps and promote ASM and our students.

- Archaeology - examines peoples and cultures of the past.
- Biological anthropology - specializes in evolution, genetics, and health.
- Cultural anthropology - studies human societies and elements of cultural life.
- Linguistic anthropology - is a concentration of cultural anthropology that focuses on language in society.
Anthropology does not limit itself to its own four subfields.
