Small Ideas Peace March - We are invited - December 18th at 5 pm

Melissa Guzman, Director of Small Ideas (where many of our students attended Day Care) wants to invite our "lovely school community" to their annual peace march on Friday December 18th at 5 pm. They leave from 52 St Nicholas Place and we head up to Edgecombe for hot chocolate peace songs and treats. It's a solstice and light celebration. Everyone brings signs and love! Our kids are hearing about all the terrible things happening in our world! We are just trying to bring peace and love to the kids day to day so they can be a part of a more peaceful future......So they can feel empowered to make a difference.

Two of our newest students, Jada (3rd) and Anaiyah (4th) will be leading "if I had a hammer" on the bullhorn, one of this year's CPE II songs.

Villalobos Brothers Concert for students in Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade this week

For the first concert of the season for our students who are part of the 92nd Street Y Musical Introduction Series, all students in grades K through 3 will attend the Villalobos Brothers concert this week. Kindergarteners will go Tuesday, and the other grades will go Wednesday. Villalobos Brothers use their violins and voices to redefine contemporary Mexican music with original compositions that masterfully blend elements of jazz, rock, classical and Mexican folk to deliver a powerful message of love, brotherhood and social justice.

Ice Skating has started

Our first class, Karen't class, went ice-skating this past Friday. This week all other classes will go. Remember snow pants and helmets are a must! Parent help is always welcome and appreciated. Stay tuned for photos.

What’s Cookin’ at Worktime?

There have been lots of goods smells coming from our classrooms this week. Many of the classes have been incorporating cooking during Worktime. Some "cooking" can be as simple as spreading cream cheese on crackers. (Using a class list, students conduct surveys to see how many of their classmates want crackers with or without cream cheese.) Other classes have been baking. This week Billy and Jessica's 4th graders made an awesome pumpkin bread. See photos and the recipe below. The class substituted cinnamon and nutmeg for the pumpkin pie spice.

By the way, if you have any of the following at home that you do not need, please send the items in. Plastic or metal mixing bowls, large spoons, measuring cups and spoons, canisters to keep flour and sugar, mini-muffin and loaf pans. We could also use another convection over.

I have also included some links to why cooking with kids is important.
