News from Ms. Hess
Fifth grade mathematicians focused on learning to divide larger numbers by a two digit divisors using a method called the box strategy and the standard algorithm. Fifth graders are asked to choose one that fits them to master; ask your child to show you his or her preference.
In literacy, we learned about the elements of setting (time and place) as well as types of conflict in narrative structures. We then read Shrinking Violet comparing and contrasting the impact of setting on the main character at home vs. at school.
Writers worked with graphic organizers to help them focus, stretch, and sequence their writing of another personal narrative focused on a moment with strong feeling in their lives.
We continued our work in science exploring the systems in the human body. We have learned about the digestive system, the circulatory system, and the respiratory system. Fifth graders will build working models of the human heart to see how a heart functions by moving water (blood ) through a system of tubes and valves. It will test their collaboration, teamwork, problem-solving, and perseverance!
Our Second Step goal is predicting other people's feelings. Predicting other's feelings can help one have empathy and compassion and help us adjust our behavior based on another's feelings.
