State of the County is Strong!
We Are Working Together to Make Life Even Better
Life is good and the state of Frederick County is strong! In my annual State of the County Address this morning, I showed a video touting our many accomplishments of the past year and highlighted where the county is going.
My goal is to make life even better for everyone in Frederick County. Making life better means attracting new local jobs; providing high-quality education and speeding up school construction; providing for a growing population of seniors; keeping our residents safe; and protecting taxpayers.
I announced three pieces of breaking news during the presentation:
Public Safety
I am submitting a $2.4 million supplemental budget to fund several new public safety initiatives:
- Technology: Next Generation 9-1-1 and Emergency Communications radio network upgrade
- Personal Protective Equipment replacement for career and volunteer firefighters (one-time funding)
- Assistant director position for Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services
- Sick leave policy fix
- Recruit class for 28 new positions (March 2019)
Solar Energy
Frederick County is going solar! Frederick County Government’s first solar project will be 1.3 megawatt solar array at Ballenger McKinney Wastewater Treatment Plant. The photovoltaic solar facility will generate renewable energy to power the treatment plant. If approved by the Board of Public Works, the project will be funded by a $2.4 million grant from the Maryland Department of the Environment.
National Television Production
Frederick County has been selected by an award-winning television series to be profiled as a great place to live, work, and raise a family. The short documentary will air on Public Television, PBS member stations, and other networks nationwide.
