Reading and Writing
Students have been learning about word families, homophones, and homonyms in reading. A story about the Word Bank at Hohoboho has been a great way to learn these concepts.
In honor of Black History month, students have been researching a famous black American. The information each child has found has been organized in a web. Next week, student will continue working on this project and make a HaikuDeck presentation on their iPads. Students will also learn strategies for oral presentations before they share these projects with their peers.
Math
This week, students continued practicing the process of subtracting2-digit numbers with and without regrouping. Of course, if students still have difficulty with this concept, they may use dimes and pennies to demonstrate the actual trade from the tens column to the pennies column. Students also learned how to write number sentences to show equal group and how to multiply by 10. The kids were extremely excited to get to count with quarters, too. Rounding to the nearest 10 and subtracting facts of 7 were other lessons practiced this week.
Social Studies and Science
In Social Studies, students learned about the first Hispanic female astronaut in NASA. This courage that necessary for attempting something new was what prompted our Black American reports. In Social Studies, students also learned about different holidays and customs we have in our county.
In Science, students continue learning about weather. Students are recording the type of clouds we have each day and make predictions for the upcoming day's weather. They are learning the importance of watching patterns for making weather forecasts.
