MSD OF DECATUR TOWNSHIP
DISTRICT NEWSLETTER - May 2023

A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Dear Decatur Township Families,
In May we are approaching the finish line of the school year. This is a special time of celebration for all students, but especially our Senior Class of 2023 as they experience their last weeks as Decatur students and celebrate the milestone of graduation coming soon! We would also like to applaud the efforts of our students in grades 3-6 as they continue to perform at their best on ILEARN over the next 2 weeks. Thank you teachers and parents for your roles in preparing and supporting our students.
The month of May is also time to celebrate several of our employee groups. This week, May 1st-5th, is Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week. Today, May 1st, is National Principal Day; May 5th is School Lunch Hero Day; May 10th is School Nurse Day; and May 18th is Speech-Language Pathologist Appreciation Day. We hope you will join us in expressing your thanks and appreciation to these individuals throughout the district. Thank you for always going above and beyond to teach and support our students!
As a reminder, 2023-2024 registration is open at decaturproud.org for all returning students, as well as for Kindergarten, Preschool, and new enrollments. Registering students now helps us to plan for appropriate class sizes and needs for the future. Please help us by completing this online process for your student(s) and spread the word to your friends and neighbors in the township.
We hope you will join us tomorrow, May 2nd, for a Culver’s Share Night to support our School Supply/Backpack Giveaway. Come out to the Culver’s on Kentucky Avenue between 5 and 8 pm and a portion of your purchase will be donated to support this important event for our students. You also might see a few familiar faces from Decatur Township Administration and our partner, the Decatur Township Fire Department.
We are looking forward to the Decatur Township Scholarship Association Awards & Recognition this Sunday, May 7th at 2 pm in the DCHS Cafeteria. We also invite you to celebrate our High School Graduation Ceremony for DCHS and DTSE on Thursday, May 25th at 7pm at the Indianapolis Convention Center.
Together we are Decatur Proud!

A NOTE FROM HEALTH SERVICES:
The end of the school year is quickly approaching and we want to make sure you are aware of Health Services guidelines relating to medications. If your student has medication in the nurse’s office, please note:
All medication MUST be picked up by a parent or legal guardian before the end of the day on May 25th.
Medications will not be sent home with K-8 students.
Controlled medications will not be sent home with any student.
Only students in grades 9-12 whose parent/guardian has checked the consent box to send medication home with the student may take home non-controlled medications (you may check with your building nurse to verify if you have checked the box).
Any medication remaining at the school after the last day of school will be destroyed. ( An adult over the age of 18 may pick the medication up only with written permission from the parent or legal guardian). Clinics will not store medications over the summer.
Thank you for allowing us to help in the care of your child this year. Please contact your school nurse if you have any questions or need to make special arrangements for pick-up.
Thank you,

BOARD MEETING RECOGNITION
At the MSD Decatur Township School Board Meeting on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Hofer recognized the DCHS Expressions Show Choir. “Expressions” is an advanced show choir ensemble that features 38 singers/dancers, a 17-person backup band (11 of them being students), and a 3-person stage crew. This co-curricular class meets during the school day, after school twice weekly during competitive season, and most Saturdays in January-March. They are directed by Mr. Scott Archer and accompanied by Ms. Jennifer Pollard. This year’s show entitled "Stronger" was about finding strength in yourself through hard times. The students’ hard work this season allowed them to successfully compete against some other amazing schools at several competitions and to make the state finals competition for the first time in Decatur Central history! Congratulations to our DCHS Expressions Show Choir on their successful season!

In March our district completed the spring window for the Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination assessment, known as IREAD-3. This assessment was developed in accordance with state legislation to measure the proficiency of foundational reading skills in Vocabulary, Non-Fiction, and Literature by the end of third grade.
Dr. Hofer recognized and commended 18 students from across the district, who each achieved a perfect score of 650 points, the highest score possible on the assessment!
What an amazing academic accomplishment!
The following students earned perfect scores on IREAD-3:
Blue Academy: Lucas Burgan, Malia Sela Gilbert, Ke’Shawn House, Deenah Shodiende
Decatur High Ability Academy: Kevin Gomez, Logan Giffin-Pierce, Graham Williams, Eva Leffler, Noah McFarland, Elodie Lenz
Gold Academy: Addelyn Clark
Stephen Decatur: Ariya Hale, Tanner Hooker, Carter Hudson, Adalynn Pettit
West Newton: Oladipupo Joseph, Kolesyn Mould, Romoluwa Ogunmoyero

Dr. Hofer also recognized the accomplishments of these two outstanding Decatur Middle School Hawk Wrestlers:
Jayden Osborn - 182 lb Weight class Mid-State Conference Wrestling Champion.

Congratulations and we are Decatur Proud of your hard work and dedication.

Tobacco, E-Cigarette, & Vaping Diversion Program
Decatur Township School Police Department, (DTSPD), in collaboration with the Drug Free Coalition, is excited to offer a new diversion program for students found to be in possession of tobacco products, e-cigarettes, and or vaping devices. DTSPD has also partnered with our local courts in an effort to minimize the use of these products and devices on our campuses. Our students, if found with the aforementioned items, would be in violation of Indiana Code 35-46-1-10.5, Minor in Possession of a Tobacco Product or an Electronic Cigarette or 7.1-5-12-8 Smoking in a Prohibited Area. Each of these would be met with an Indiana citation, also known as a “Uniform Traffic Ticket,” (UTT). When submitted to the courts, the cost of the ticket for this violation is $170.50. This is an actual ticket and will affect your license or the ability to obtain one if left unpaid.
Our objective however, is not to create financial hardship, but to have an opportunity to educate students and families on the dangers of vaping and tobacco products. Twice per month, DTSPD officers will present a 1-hour class for students who have opted to accept the terms of the diversion program. The cost of the class for a student attending alone is $75.00. If a student attends the class with a parent or guardian, the class is discounted at a cost of $25.00. Upon the completion of the class, the UTT, or citation, will not be referred to the courts, and there will be no record of the violation. A student may only participate in the program once per school year, and only twice throughout their entire school career.
